NAB Show 2022

I'm not at NAB but started this thread since the show opens today and nobody have posted anything yet on this forum about this year's event. I think it is a big deal since this is the first NAB in 3 years, the last one was April 6-11, 2019. So let's get the ball rolling and the good stuff coming.

Newsshooter and CineD are the best places to follow the biggest news (and the frequency).

In general, the magic is lost because there are product announcements almost on a weekly basis all year long, but maybe we'll see some huge things specifically this week.

You have just mentioned my "go-to-websites" for industry news. They are the first two sites I visit every morning after turning on my computer. I was just surprised that the last NAB news here was the cancellation of the show last year after being rescheduled to the end of the year.

Forum's traffic, participation dropped tremendously after the 2021 update.

Some weeks there is only a handful of posts and you'll see the same 5-8 people on them.

But it's good on you for keeping it going!

I joined this community back in 2006 but hasn't been around here lately, like in the last few years. To be honest I thought this forums were dead, like dvinfo.net

Most companies, if not all, aren't going to be releasing any new cameras anytime soon. They can announce them to compete vaporly, which is SOP in the modern world.

Electronics shortage is painful.

For the first time in its history, B&H actually had to develop a 'Request Assistance' button for their front-end to try and explain the camera shortage for over half of their products (at least all of the good ones, most desired).

The NAB raison d'être is also in question. There are plenty of 4K-6K cameras but the basic broadcast is still 720(60). The "sweet spot" for the 4K/8K consumer lines has dropped down to $4,000-$5,000 and the image quality is great. And the auto focus is available on top of that. Where do the pros go from there? The LF is all the high end needs but the Netflix list includes even what might have been described at one time as "consumer tier product". Of curse, there are new lights, lenses, gimbals, drones and so on but even that seemed to have reached the point of diminishing returns.

And taking two years off - however it was proffered - didn't help much either.

I'm with NorBro, I think it's just hard to launch a product right now. They can't get you a unit for 6 months or a year unless you pre-order right away.

I assume that once the draconian lockdowns in China fade, then we'll start to see supply chain improvements. And that will probably happen relatively soon. Omicron tore through the US in like 3 months or less from start to finish. It might take longer there due to the lockdowns but still less than 6 months, I wager

Back in like 2013-2016, Blackmagic was the star of NAB.

It was so, SO, exciting to stay up all night over on BMCuser and speculate what kind of new cameras they would release and other products.

Then when we got the first glimpse of their huge banners going up early from someone there, we all lost it trying to read the letters and see the images.

I'll always remember that...so fun. And their marketing was very powerful.

These days, Blackmagic is about 4 years overdue for a new and exciting camera and everything is...eh.

But that's also old age talkin'.

I miss those days. I remember the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K banner. It was so intriguing. Everybody was trying to figure out what the camera would look like; kind of like what Apple did at the last keynote, when they presented the new Mac Studio showing the bottom (air intake) first.

Fresh off the presses- Jeromy Young is no longer with Atomos. This took place .. eh, over a year ago. I am so tuned in to the latest.

Oh, and off the Newshooter, there's a new CF Express B card that sustains 1,750 MB/s. The need for the external Jeromy's is evaporating quickly.

You're way behind...his replacement, Estelle, was let go last week. She was supposed to relocate to Australia once the pandemic settled but never did so she's out. Trevor (their CTO) is now the interim CEO.

II think it is a big deal since this is the first NAB in 2 years. .

Actually, three years. The last NAB was 2019. Cancelled in April 2020. Ccancelled in April 2021. Ccancelled again in October 2021.

The show is great so far. Smaller crowds, fewer booths, but a higher concentration of serious professionals. My impression is that there are far fewer tire kickers this year who use NAB as an excuse for a Vegas vacation. For those who think NAB is all about new product announcements, you couldn't be more mistaken. NAB is all about the chance to rub shoulder with colleagues, share ideas and experiences, and make important connections for future work. If you don't know that, then you would be better off staying home and reading blogs.

Of course there is a different prerogative if and when one has the opportunity to attend.

But other people all over the country and world aren't concerned with rubbing shoulders and making hypothetical important connections with strangers they will never meet; they want to hear what's new, what's great, updates on existing announcements, etc.

You are right about the time frame. What I was trying to say is that 2 years of NAB conventions (2020 and 2021) were skipped. I've been to NAB three times and all I can say is that people attend the show for different reasons. Just like the name, National Association of Broadcasters, doesn't really represent what is going on there, because it comprises many fields, from the big television networks all the way down to the independent "solo" content creator. NAB is about all what you say, but new product announces has always been a big part of it, to the point that manufacturers felt the pressure every year to work on something new they could present in Las Vegas and deliver by IBC in Amsterdam.

Companies can do that 367 24/7 without NAB.
As I said, NAB is about networking, asking questions in person, and test driving new toys. I would venture to say that very few people at the show care about or are even aware of new announcements. Some people, yes, but not most.

Also, it's not hypothetical strangers that you'll never meet again. You'd be surprised at how connections I've made at NAB have resulted in additional work over the decades I've been attending. I've been coming to NAB since 1984 and have only missed a few shows during those years, so please don't try to tell me you know more about it than I do if you have never been here once.
