NAB 2026

Well, it looks like the releases are starting to trickle out in advance of NAB.

Regarding the Deity PR-4, finally a price at $449. Not too bad, and about what I was expecting. I'm putting in a pre-order and we'll see if it solves for my specific use case. If it does then the old MixPre6-II may be going out the door for resale.

I was excited to see what Blackmagic would do in their live webinar and although all of the broadcast stuff isn't up my alley, I was pleasantly surprised to see the addition of a Photo tab to Resolve.

I switched over to Resolve for all of my video editing and color-grading a few years back now, but I still use Capture One for all of my photo shoot needs.

It remains to be seen how useful Resolve will be as a Capture One competitor, but I'm excited to check out what it can do. As someone who does both stills and video it's an appealing thought to be able to do all of it in one application.

GoPro releasing a new camera that has a Micro 4/3 mount was not on my bingo list, but it's the first time I've been halfway interested in their product now, so kudos to them on pushing the limits there. I'll probably wait to see how the image quality is before getting TOO interested. I have some pretty small cameras already.

Mostly I'm trying to spend as little on gear as possible this year though.

- Or how reliable it is. Gopro has failed too many filmmakers at critical times to be considered reliable professional gear at this point. Things could always change though...

I think the last time I used a GoPro for a shot that actually made it into some sort of edit was 2008 or 2009? I strapped it to the forehead of a college swimmer for a few shots.

When they first came out they were a bit of a fun novelty camera for trick shots or an underwater view but the quality didn't really do it for me so I pretty much never shot on them again. I know times have changed though and the quality has improved a lot since I owned the version 2 or 3??? I can't quite remember which model.

Neat idea. But MFT with a 1-inch sensor means I'd want like a 10mm lens or wider (or a 10-24 zoom or whatever)...I think. Still, a cool thing from them. Thanks for mentioning it. Here's their Mission 1 product page: https://gopro.com/en/us/info/mission-1-learnmore

Also, GoPro is a local(ish) company to me. I used to see people from there on bike rides and stuff. Did you hear the news from a week ago? Hope it works out for them.

What's with the large red spelled out record light? I assume you can turn it off?

It's sad that the days of thoughtful, recognisable product design without increasing the size of a logo are long gone!

Yeah that definitely needs to have the option to turn off. Hopefully it does or it's getting some black gaff tape over it.

you’re pretty much losing a potentially welcome light. Maybe someone who cares enough will 3D print a door with a solid clear window.

The cheese plate option is really cool though. I’d be inclined to use the bag away from the camera for mirrorless work and the bag looks great too.

Holy cow this looks good. Might actually be what I'm looking for over the Deity PR-4. More cost, but looks to have some insane versatility.

Maybe some of my more sound-inclined friends on here can weigh in?

Ya, Zaxcom had a mockup last year at NAB. Expected within the next couple of months. $1600 announced price. I haven't watched the video... Considering the price of Zaxcom's current (great) transmitters, would be REALLY cool if they brought out some lower-cost, say $800-$1000, transmitters.

I spoke with someone over at Gotham sound via phone a bit earlier and they seem to think it should be ready any day, hopefully... But they also caveated that it's been "coming soon" for 4 months.

Now that NAB has come and gone, I'm curious if there were any big standouts to people?

I didn't attend but checked out all of the online footage and content produced by many who were there.

A few things on my list:

Initially I was pretty excited to see the Deity PR-4 come to market. Honestly I still think it looks great for what it is.

However I was unaware of what Zaxcom had up their sleeve with the release of the DCiRX and I think it's probably more what I was looking for. Waiting another week or so until it's hopefully available but at the moment I think I'm going that direction, even despite the much increased cost over the PR-4.

The Mofage Poco II may finally be the RF to PL mount adapter with drop-in filters that I pick up. I have a couple of dumb RF to PL adapters from Metabones that work really well, but having a PL adapter with a built-in variable ND would be extremely helpful at times.

Apparently Arri has a new line of LED tube lights coming out that look pretty good. They're bound to be expensive, but the system they developed looks very smart. Not officially announced at NAB, but I saw an instagram post from an Arri party where they were highlighted.

I've no need of any new cameras at the moment, so I kind of ignored the hype around some of those products.

Canon's new 11-55 Cine Servo would actually be quite useful for me across a wide range of camera bodies, but at $35k it's out of my price range. I'm also amazed at their new 40-1200. Holy cow, what a piece of glass. That range isn't something I use in my work but I'm sure the users of the previous generation of that lens are licking their chops at the chance to shoot with it.

Lots of other fun and useful tools that came out as well, and many I'm sure I missed or didn't highlight here, so let me know what you all saw!

Lots of cool stuff on the floor this year. The biggest standouts to me aren’t the biggest products that were out there, not that there were many huge products released this year. Fairlight Live may be the biggest new product I saw, and it’s quite impressive, but also has very little to do with the work I do. It’ll be great for folks who do that kind of live production.

The new Pro Tools update has some impressive features coming: new visualizers for immersive panning, pin tracks (ability to pin and unpin a track to the top of the edit window), and some very cool improvements to the transcription tools and related workflow for dialog editing.

Most of the things that really caught my attention were microphones. Sanken are introducing a cardioid companion to the CS-M1. I absolutely love my CS-M1s (I have two), and love the idea of having the cardioids to go with them. They’ll come in at the same price point as the CS-M1 as well.

Audio Technica had a mid-side mic kit on display that I’m watching for (should be shipping late summer). It’s a capsule based on the same design as their clamp-on instrument mics (ATM350). It comes with both the clamp-on gooseneck mount and (this is what really caught my attention) a magnetic-mount boundary mic enclosure. The capsule can be moved between them very easily. I love a good plant mic and there are quite a few different applications I can see for this.

DPA now have a 5.1 surround mic array. It looks like a cushioned bicycle seat, but it has five 4060 capsules mounted inside.

Not sound-related, but I did find out that DZOFilm are moving away from pretty much all cine lenses that aren’t full-frame, so the M43 and S35 lenses are going away. Boo.

Ah, interesting. Yeah I don't have any DZO lenses myself, but I've appreciated what they've brought to the market the last few years. It's unfortunate they're moving away from the smaller formats.

Personally I've been eyeballing some S35 format zooms lately, specifically for their smaller size and weight, when I'm shooting that format. Not everyone needs full-frame all of the time!

I’m a huge fan of the S35 format. It just looks good. I mean… how many films over the past decades have we been drawn into that were shot on 35mm and Super 35mm?

I’d say that now is the time to grab a set of DZO’s Pictor cinema zooms while there’s still some stock on the shelves.
