NAB 2014: AJA Debuts CION: 4K/UHD/HFR/12-bit 444 Professional Camera (video)

Did anyone find out any more specific news on how the cion 120fps recording works in real life situations...what kind of external recorders would support 4 x 3g sdi output....does it mean dragging a tons of additional gear, super expensive external recorder and cables? if yes...then it means that this is something we can't really do in run and gun and medium budget filming situations....if anyone has any input on this subject please share...thanks

This will hurt RED the most. All the Scarlet guys who are waiting for the Dragon upgrades will instead buy this camera at the same price which they would have spent for upgrading. And they get industry standard protocols. It is great that one can shoot in prores.

If they can include an EF mount, then it will be good. Look forward to more footage.
Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c_d_WUXs5Q The Aja rep in this interview says that they have left it to the third party manufacturers to create other mounts for the Cion.

I completely agree with you...it will hurt red, sony f5 and f55 as well as canon c500...because for the fraction of the price you get a full working horse camera...but before releasing it on the market they should add internal nd filters and hopefully some internal 120fps recording option even if it means 2k 4:2:2 recording...because no one that I know wants to mess with external recorders, tons of cables (4x3g sdi - cmon!!!) and beeing hooked up while shooting handheld on some kind of external devices....otherwise this looks very very promising....

Yeah I dont know... I dont think its a RED killer just yet..
They still got :
Great raw
Internal HFR
More stops

But the CION looks promising!
I think I will continue with the fs700 with the CD 7Q until next NAB at the very least :)

Yes that sounds very very reasonable...the fs700 price performance is still very hard to beat...especially with the new convergent design...

Yeah, FS700 + 7Q is a pretty amazing combo and you get an extra stop of DR with the 7Q. Still not sure why CION has PL mount. Not like most people who are buying a $9K camera are going to have the cash to own any PL mount lens; and renting them is very expensive and it's inconvenient to rent all the time. They should do some type of more universal mount since their crowd will be the mid-budget crowd who probably mostly own Nikon / Canon type lenses.

I think the fs700 is (now) an anomaly with the 7q like the gh2 was with some patches. The sensors still modern and as of today no one can beat the HFR fs700/7q combo. Plus as others has demonstrated the image out of the fs700 is stunning. I like this AJA camera a bunch but I'm finding it hard to see how trading in the fs700 could benefit my needs more. Hey I like the form factor, build quality, recording formats but need to see more what this particular sensor can do under a challenging setting. If it shares the same sensor as the bm4k only time will tell if AJA corrected what BM wasn't able to fix.

I must have missed something. How do we know it's the same sensor as Blackmagic 4K? Is that just extrapolating from the 12 stop range?

Global shutter, same dynamic range and the fact that one of their reps said it was.
He also said that it is designed for sensor swaps when a new one become available.

Looks interesting- and the second camera from a card/peripheral maker.

What's next, the Nvidia Quadro 4K Cam? GeForce G-Cam?

Huhn.. same sensor. Interesting. This one does have an OLPF with some IR filtering. I think this is a pretty elegant design and the output formats are very compelling. There's still lots to find out but I like the image quality of the BMCC, at least what I've seen. Great, thanks for that info.

Yeah, The PL-mount is a little daunting to a lot of people, but then again they did mention that they left it to 3rd party manufactures for other mounts. So Im guessing they should already have someone who is interested.
A really good thing about all this "hopefully" is that better cameras will go further and further down in prices so you dont have to spend half a million on a camera in order for it to be good. Same thing with 3-axis brushless gimbals that a lot of time cost just as much as the cameras now.... Hopefully DJI Ronin will do something bout that :)

Wait, which video? I noted the first part where he commented about it being the same sensor, but I don't recall that second part about swapping it in the future. I figured they had to have at least considered it given the current direction of the market.

Hellou everyone,

it was an exciting year at NAB and AJA CION definitely seems like a very interesting camera. For our work we need the abililty to record 100 fps and up. However AJA CION can't do it internally and needs some kind of external recorder that supports the 4x 3g-sdi outputs. Does anyone know will the odyssey 7q recorder be able to support that, and enable us to record the 120fps from AJA CION...or for that fact will the ATOMOS SHOGUN be an even better option? Did AJA announced any future upgrades on their ability to records frames higher than 60fps internally? If anyone has any additional info on this subject please let us know....
