NAB 2013 predictions?

Andrew Reid seems to be on the ball at NAB, an interesting piece on his blog at the moment talking about the prototype Sony 4k DSLR...

I thought the sony presentation was boring...and the camera prototypes are 2 years away minimum. I'm wondering where the cheap 4k cameras designed around the 1" aptina sensors are hiding ?

In terms of 4k for TV I doubt that it has a very long shelf life, in fact I think it's the new 3D... It will die a death very quickly.

In order to see the difference from HD you need to have a screen 55inch plus... And for most homes, that too big!

The acquisition of media in higher resolutions allows for greater control in editing and as we all know this can have huge benefits, but there is very little to gain from a 4k TV...

The difference from SD to HD was significant to everyone, HD to UHD is noticeable only to us pixel peepers..

These days most people stream content from the web to their phones, tablets or desktop monitors making 4k even less desirable...

No predictions here, more of a wish...I hope ONE, just ONE company announces a camera (that will actually be released) that extremely mortal humans can afford. So far, it's been very high end stuff and/or prototypes.

That's a hell of a good price for the S16 camera if it's similar in picture quality to the Digital Bolex. Not that you can have many audio inputs on a box that size, but if it shoots raw I'd order one.

EDIT: and looks like it does do Raw!

I always thought the same thing until I started playing with the smaller tablets last year. I have a Nexus7 to run the gopro app and show demo's on that I can carry in my pocket. It's actually a pretty nice looking display at 7" and 1280x800. I also now have an Asus 13.3" Zenbook with a 1920x1080 display. It is pretty amazing to see the difference between a 1600x900 and full HD at that size. It's changed my way of thinking about the whole 4k thing. Compare these images at the same distance you view your 24" 1920x1080 monitor. They just look way better.

The rule of thumb is that if you are 2.5 times the screen height away HD is sufficient. In reality, there is a significant improvement in the perception of sharpness and acutance with quality higher resolution displays way past the 2.5 times screen height distance. The Apple Retina displays are a classic example. Put one next the a 1600x900 13.3" display and even at 3 or 4 feet the difference is simply astounding.

4k may bring this same type of effect to 46 - 55" HD displays in your home. When you see your own work at these higher resolutions on smaller screens it brings a new understanding of what 4k might become.

Just my $0.02 on the 4k thing. It looks like it's going off whether we like it or not though.

Cheers,
Pete

And here's the news on the Canon C100

A New York Canon Authorized Retailer has the C100 with 24-105 Lens at $6,099. Body only $5,499!

Which means we'll see the same price from FORUM SPONSORS! Buy the C100 from FORUM SPONSORS!

There you have it, that's the Canon News!

Canon's bullet proof ploy to attract cash strapped Indies:

"hey guys ignore all that really cheap and really powerful blackmagic stuff, get yourself into loads of debt and get a far more overpriced and underspecced canon instead, which will be thoroughly outdated by the time you finally finish paying it off!"

its no wonder Indies are abandoning canon.

That's it? That price has been going on here in Canada supposedly for months. The Body price that is. Not the Lens package.

Hopefully there is something else, like a new camera or new lens or something.

Maybe Canon are holding off for their April 23rd Announcement.

They will hopefully adjust pricing accordingly.....although they won't have to if the next Black Magic cameras are in as short supply as their first.

I'm a little surprised GoPro hasn't announced anything new. I fully expected them to at least update the Hero 3 Black's 4K frame rates to 24 and 30 fps.
