NAB 2013 predictions?

We're only 5 weeks (plus the weekend) away and no predictions . . . seems a bit odd based upon previous years?

43Rumors (which isn't something I'd bet money on) has a post with "FT5" probability Panasonic will be bringing something new in the Micro 4/3 category . . .
Yep, I know, "development cycle" . . . it's not time, yet.
Still, looking back at last year when BlackMagic-Design stunned the crowd with the BMCC announcement gets me to thinking . . .
it'd be pretty cool if Panasonic had another rabbit or two left in their hat!

Maybe I should have entitled this "wish list" instead of predictions (because I don't have any predictions)?
I think m4/3 still has a lot of road left ahead.
Wouldn't it be fun if we got an announcement of something like the AF-100A (which doesn't seem to be setting the world on fire) but with a new sensor.
(and a couple of goodies to justify the move from the AF-100, or addition of)?

Hey, I don't know, maybe I should have made the title NAB 2013 Dreamfest?
Here's hoping!

Tens of thousands will gather, gear will be played with, other gear will be behind glass, deals will get made, people will gamble....

Oh, wait.... not what you meant.

Panasonic will announce a new Pro m43 camera.

My predictions, based upon hearsay, rumor and a lot of guessing:

On the camera front:

Panasonic 4K Varicam.

Canon C200.

Canon XF 300/305 replacement or major upgrade. Maybe 1/2" chips?

Sony full frame sensor NXCAM, preferably in the EA50 body with ND filters.

Sony PMW300 - replacement for the EX3. Maybe next year.

JVC will be happy with the HM650, but the sensors from this camera in a shoulder mount design can't be far off.

Perhaps a Sony NX5U replacement.

Hopefully more info on the consumer 4K cams from Panasonic and Sony.

Arri Alexa 4K.

The one I feel most confident about is the full frame NXCAM. But it's still just a guess.
But I did predict the HPX600! Except the single sensor part.

Lots of 4K monitors and editing solutions.

its actually in the development cycle. announcement was april 2010 and april 2013 would mark 3 years since af100 was announced

I'd like to see a 4K NEX-VGxx model with a very mild OLPF. It would be great if Sony made the EVF removable so that it could be mounted a little more flexibly. And 10- and 12-bit support would be great. Also, HDMI 2.0 would allow 2160p60 at higher bit depths.

I remember when HDV was introduced it used a MPEG-2 transport stream which was a breeze to edit using a Pentium 4 computer. I could render the video in real time. Then MPEG-4 was introduced and it took days for my computer to render the video. No wonder most people thought HD was not ready for prime time.

That will not happen before there are cheap 4K UDTVs and monitors.

You need to generate content before people have necessity to view it. You think people will buy a 4k TV for no reason? The PS4, for the same reason, is being released before we have mainstream 4k displays. People buy it thinking they don't care about 4k, then 4k TV's are suddenly made affordable and people say what the heck and buy one. The PS3 was one of the key devices in driving HD into the home. It's a tried and tested business model. If people feel that they have to buy a lot of stuff at once they think rationally but presented with incremental changes they are far more malleable.

For me, I think we already have cameras that are *almost* ideal no matter what you do. I feel like we're entering an age of refinement vs a huge paradigm shift until 4k becomes a standard. The perfect camera for me personally would be a BMCC with a focus on making shooting easier (ND filters, XLR, interchangeable batts, prores slomo, cineform etc). Or maybe it would be a C100 with a lower pricetag and 60p? See what I mean? All it will require is tweaking to make a huge difference at this point because mostly everyone produces a camera I can pick up and make something that looks great on (even going back to the AF100). It's about the little things at this point...

Oh right a prediction. I agree with the idea that GoPro will make a proper video camera with interchangeable lenses and 2.5-4k cineform RAW. I think their last gopro was them trying out some of the tech that will make it into this camera. I think they will try to keep the price under $5k and if they do these things (and don't do anything stupid), they will eat Canon and BMD's lunch in this price range.

(p.s. - more of a hope than a prediction is that Panasonic will return to form ith something that I am excited about. They obviously have the ability; just look at the name of this site...)

I'd love to see a sub $8000 4K camera that shoots 10bit HVEC (H.265) @ 25Mbps or more with variable frame-rates from 1 - 60 (at least, if not 90 or 120).

Perhaps Panasonic fits the bill?
