NAB 2013 predictions?

Procured my March 2013 issue of POST magazine and it had this under bits & pieces for NAB 2013.

'At NAB 2013, GOPRO (www.gopro.com) will debut its newest
line of Hero3 cameras. The company also has plans to show some
new proof-of-concept technology.'

One concept GOPRO might work on "proving" is trademark/copyright law and free-speech:

This entire fiasco has turned me right off on GOPRO products, but perhaps they are trying to emulate another famous camera manufacturer?

I seriously doubt many people would like to be associated as a customer of any company which persecutes reviewers. I guess they are expanding rapidly and as it happens during rapid expansion a lot of mediocre people get hired. I don't expect the top guy in Go Pro do to this kind of idiotic persecution. I guess it is the job of some over jealous executives who seriously don't know how to handle criticism. A Canon or Sony or Arri will not persecute a reviewer. It is only Upstarts who will persecute media for not towing their line.

I attended NAB in 2001 and 2012, won't be going there this year though. My main prediction is that everything that was announced last year will get to be RE-ANNOUNCED this year as well, such as the Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

On that one, Blackmagic had told us at NAB that the thing will be shipping by June -- June of last year, that is. However, when I last look for it on the afternoon on 23 March 2013, I had found that the BCC is now either BACK-ORDERED or maybe it can also be PRE-ORDERED, depending on which particular lens mount version of it will you not be getting.

concerning the gopro legal action.....this week I had renewed interest in the gopro and went to the goproforum and read complaint after complaint of the hero 3. That coupled with this has renewed my interest in the sony ! Thanks gopro for pointing me in the politically correct direction !

I've got a couple gopro2s... and the sony as15. The ONLY reason to get the sony over the gopro is if you absolutely need a built-in stabilizer. I'd trade the as15 for a hero3 in half a heartbeat. The 3 came out a month after I bought the sony.

I read the link... it bums me out as I'm a huge fan of DigitalRev... but I can't believe any company could be more restrictive of anything than sony. I consciously look to other options in any other brand first*... ever since sony consciously neutered mini-disc technology... and has kept pushing policies like that ever since...

*I don't deny that sony still makes good stuff... and at times, is still the best choice... but I do consciously look for other options first.

Matt- using supposedy copyrights issues on youtube to censor our media information is a much bigger issue that this digitalrev/gopro deal. In fact it's one of the tricks that the gov and corrupt corporations use most to control information they don't want revealed , which is why I'm sad it's being used in a dispute over cameras by a relatively small company ...well at least until foxconn entered the picture. I wonder if tactics like this have anything to do with it's recent investment ? Duh !

Sadly camera folks, like all technologist, tend to be politically myopic and only think about the cool technology, and not about it's consequences. And while sony is a gigantic corporation, it wasn't sony concerned about being compared to gopro . And , as I said, the goproforums were full of hero 3 complaints ...at least the day I visited, so it appears they're suffering some growing pains . One thing you've got to give them credit for is opening up this market. And I'm also waiting on the pany ax100 and see how that plays out, but the sony's price point obviously scared gopro and makes for strong competition.

Since this is the NAB predictions thread and people are discussing GoPro quite a bit, here's my prediction for the company at NAB: They'll have an overly loud and somewhat obnoxious presence at the show this year, although hopefully not as bad as last year.

Any news on other Panasonic cameras that might be like a HMC150 or ac90 type coming out?

I could see an HMC150 replacement coming out. The AC90 is too new in the product cycle to be replaced. I could also see a possibility
that the P2-format HPX170 might surface in a totally new design.

The AC130/160 is more or less the replacement for the HMC150, and the HPX250 is more or les the replacement for the HPX170. The whole CCD vs CMOS debate aside, it isn't really possible to get a true 1920x1080 CCD that small, and demand is for "true" HD. So a true (i.e. CCD) replacement of the 150 or 170 probably isn't going to happen.

Where do you recommend I look at for the best coverage of NAB? This web sight or do you have another one you would recommend? And what is the date you would see all the new products being talked about? Is it April 9th?
Thanks and looking forward to hearing from all the guys on the field.

Wouldn't that be the AC130/160 and HPX250? I doubt there'll be any 1/3" CCD cameras anymore.

EDit - i see I've been beat.

I think the AC130 is pretty much the HMC150 replacement by a new name. 1/3" sensors shooting AVCHD at 1080 and 720....basically a 150 with CMOS chips and a better lens.

Ooops, everyone beat me to that one, lol.

Yea, it's definitely more likely that it's a C50 or or new Cinema DSLR, I just don't see how you can have a "quality Cinema EOS camera" when you're already taking away from the pretty basic C100. I guess they can remove the XLRs. I'd prefer a 7Dc that shoots 2.5k in a dslr body, rather than a stripped down barebones C50.
