my worst dvx footage ever :(

So far, I have about 68 hours on my dvx odometer and last night I found what I think is the worst piece of dvx footage I have. It was sometime around christmas and everyone was drunk, myself included. having said that, this was a low light room, the focus I left on manual by mistake, the shutter was 1/60 in 24p adv mode, this is before I found out about the cinelike-d setting so theres tons of noise, oh and yeah I obviously didnt think to white balance. any suggestions?

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

I dunno. If all of your footage looks this red, you could do some sort of "Christmas Cathouse" fratboy short. "When the yule log burns low, it's time for ho ho hos." But then, I may be drunk right now myself.

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

Try color correcting a little bit but if all your footage is like that :-/

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

asking for suggestions because 1) yes all the footage looks like that and 2) i tried many variations of color correction in vegas and it still looked bad.

even with magic bullet this footage looked like poo-poo.

my challenge for any of you is to see if you can fix it?

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

I'd suggest that you desaturate the footage completely, making it black and white. The color cast is so severe that it will not look good even extracting the excessive red/orange.

Also add a small amount of blur to counter some of the noise. There's an After Effects plug-in called Grain Surgery that does a pretty good job of getting rid of noise. I believe there is also a freeware app that supposedly does the same thing although I'm not sure where you'd find it. I think somone posted a link on this board one time.

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

Black and White is a very good idea, at least the best for your footage!

Hi, Guys!
My first post;D I dont even know if this will upload, but i'll try. I think it's improved. I've removed some of the noise too.

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

I just did some stuff in Premiere Pro.
- Added "Color Balance (RGB)" and turned down the red to 70.
- Added "Color Corrector" and made the gray point a little darker and red'er. then i changed the RGB gain to 1.40.
- Added "Puremotion Noise Reduction" set it to 5.0
- Added a "Levels" control and changed the black input to 17

And that was it.. ;)

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

Ive usually noticed that noise reduction somehow smooths out the picture. I wonder what it might look like after a program such as MTI Correct

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

Here is my approach to color correcting this in vegas.
if you are a vegas user i can post a link with the plugin chain for you to download.

you can use the noise reduction filter but it does soften your image.

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

I think insomniacs cc+diffusion is about the best you can expect. I'd go with that.

Or give them just a sound track and tell 'em you were so drunk you left the lens cap on.

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

I understand it's not the effect you were going for - but there's nothing wrong with bathing a shot in color.
What's so bad about the red? I think it looks fine. It's interesting and the xmas lights justify it.

IMO- All the corrected versions look worse.

Re: my worst dvx footage ever :(

thanks for the input, there are parts of the clip that are very shaky from stumbling around. I havent done much drunken footage since christmas, cuz its always a pain in the ass in post.
