My video just went viral!!

In 3 hours since my earlier post the vid has had almost 70K views... well over 2M now. (this is pretty damn cool...)

Considering we were just having a long discussion on how to make a vid go viral... I think we have a Viral Video Professor among us :)

So what are the conversations with your friends (from the video) like? They've gotta' be having fun with this too(?) Are any of those guys personal friends that you're sharing emails with, such as "holy sh*t dude... can you believe this?"...

Either way... I'm glad you're a vocal DVXuser member and shared the experience... I think we have at least one pretty good recipe for how to do a viral vid... thanks to you.

Thanks Matt,

They're extremely excited and they can't believe that it happened so fast. Neither did I. Since it is acting, some of these guys are going to use this as part of their acting reel. After all it did look convincing to a lot of folks. Personally I wish I had more time but oh well, its exceeding way beyond my expectations. I forgot to mention, my brother sent the clip to the original director of SAW, James Wan and he liked it. Haha. I thought that was pretty cool. Also to put things in perspective, 175,000 on Facebook shared this video and the number climbs every hour. Insane and a lot of my friends just noticed that I was the one who did the video. Anyway, I'm just having fun and actually working the next one. I have no problem getting actors now. Hehe

I think a dozen friends I know sent it to Tosh 0 already. I don't know who he is but I'm guess he's big time. What I do want is to get 50cent involved some how. I notice he likes to guest appear on a lot of youtuber videos.

Thanks everyone for watching. I know Barry Green hates this video because I used bad words. :)

So would you say it was Facebook that really boosted your views, or was it Attack of the Show?

Since I posted the first trailer for Marianne a week and a half ago, I've gotten almost 2700 views, but most of those came all at once and that was when Philip Bloom was kind enough to tweet the link to his 21000 followers. The bulk of it came from that, and all the articles and interviews in all the blogs and newspapers that came afterwards, when I started sending out info, have only generated 1/4 of that first peak.

Yes, you know that could of been it. But I still believe that the massive amount of people sharing on FB had to of triggered fans of G4 to probably send the video to them or a staff of the show could of seen it. At this point there's now over 200,000 people who has shared this clip on FB. It's only been 12 days.

ps: Now I just remembered. It was actually www.worldstarhiphop.com that triggered the first wave of numbers. On that site, the video got over 300,000 views and was on the front page. Then I heard about the AOTS after but they both played a major role.

Again, thank you everyone.

Missed this over the week. There's a bit of misinformation in this... real hood people would've ran right after he got stabbed!!!

haha. Funny stuff, Ousa and I definitely shared it with my friends. This thread should go along with the other one which, as Matt said, we were all just discussing and debating over.

I'm pretty sure some of the others in the other thread would say this isn't a true viral video... and of course I'm gonna disagree all the way. Here was my checklist from the last thread:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?234257-Going-viral&p=2211066&viewfull=1#post2211066

Notes from my notebook in the last year, in no specific order, on viral marketing, advertising, video:

- The utmost important asset any viral video can have is repeatability. You need to have SOMETHING in there that your audience can take away and use on their friends, with their friends, around their friends. This is the true virus. It's like a kissing disease at a party filled with hot people: by the end of the night, everyone's got it.

Examples: Lonely Island, Auto-Tune The News, Charlie Bit Me, Chocolate Rain

The last of which is a viral phrase unto itself. The kid says "CHARLIE BIT MEY!"... you know what it sounds like in your head if you've seen the video, if one of your friend says it, the rest of the day you'll be spouting it no matter HOW annoying it is.

2. Movie Spoofs and Video Games go Viral. Anything that has to do with any popular video game will go viral if it looks good, sounds good, and has a lot of Fan Service. Fan Service is basically a bad storyline straight from the game that caters to EVERYTHING that fans love about the game.

Well, no that's not really what it is, just make sure that you're not forgetting the fans.

3. Violence is pretty viral. It sucks to say, but some of the most viral videos are candid shots of people getting beat up, run over, falling from things, hurting themselves on accident etc. Violence still sells. But, if the violence looks staged, it may be forgotten.

See: parent whipping child with belt on facebook camera, chic falling from stripper pole, skateboarder skating into the street and surviving being run over by a van with no injuries

4. Misfortune in general. Everyone likes to see others suffer. MisFortune gets views.

See: don't taze me bro

5. Going Viral also has to do with communities. THere's this one community that shall not be named that will turn anything viral or into a meme in less than a day if it appeals to their trollish ways. This same community will also find you if you did something bad and you post it on the internet. That should be enough info to google and find out what the community is, but rest assured if you want to go viral, simply post your video there and if it's worth viral consideration, the next day it'll have several hundreds of thousands of views.

See: Chocolate Rain

- Timing. Is everything. Make sure you time it right and you could get a lot of play.

Now, why can't companies replicate this success? Because, it's staged.

Google/YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I9vip8z-hY

this is clearly, CLEARLY a staged effort by Pizza Hut to go viral. It fails, so hard. Although Jim Bruer cracks me the heck up in this, it fails... because they're trying to sell a product.

THE most viral videos happen either on accident, are plays on the misfortunes of others, or have to do with video games. The very last one is the closest I'd be willing to say you can make go viral if the video game franchise is large enough. That's why these companies can't replicate the free exposure to millions that people happen across, they're trying to go viral with a PRODUCT, which means they have to show the product in a certain light, etc.

It's not free form, you're just marketing, and I don't know if it's strictly because you can't do what you want, or your audience knows that it's staged that keeps it from sticking.

Quiznos has to have THE worst viral marketing campaign I have ever witnessed. I eat Quiznos a LOT... but, it's not because of those stupid cats and cute animals. That almost made me cease purchasing my favorite meal from the franchise.

I've got a lot more thoughts about the whole "Viral" deal, but those are some that came from my notebook.

Oh, and here's what Rainfall Films did that went viral: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBCzkz3gHb8

The view count on that link does not reflect the 10Million + Views Sam's pet project got on April 1st 2008. The video was featured on every major video game blog on the internet, ran on television in a few places and even made it to some major film blogs within a few days time.
How far off am I?

There's a recognizable and iconic piece here: the light saber. There's violence and misfortune, and it was spread by some of the largest communities.

And I am willing to bet Ousa could do it again without even blinking.

Thanks Kholi,

Not sure if I can do it again but I do have a working formula. I'm already working on the next one and again I'm using the element of surprise. I'm betting 99% of the people watching won't have a clue what will happen next. Since they already seen the gang fight, many will expect something similar. I do have a big surprise and you'll just have to watch to find out. Hahah I just hope my cast can pull this one off. One is already injurded and so am I. Haven't been this phsyical in a long long time. No I'm not in it, just showing the actors how I wanted it done. Some things are hard to explain and it's better to just show them. Anyway, I can't beleive its at 3.1 million views in just 2 weeks.

They finally made me a partner as well. Surprised it only took 3 days to get approved. My friends are still waiting and its been a few months. The extra partner are features are really cool. I'm not expecting to make any money any time soon though. I'm still new to all partnership. We'll see how it goes. I'm still trying to finish my feature right now and this whole youtube thing is distracting. haha.

Hoping I can get the new video uploaded by the first week of March. I'll make sure this one gets a Barry Green approval. I know how Barry despise my ghettoness. ;)

Never had this before but it's kind of cool.
