To further your analogy - which of these would you rather eat?
Personally - I'd rather have them both, the way they were meant to be enjoyed.
To me, it isn't really carrot cake at all if it doesn't have the frosting...

There seems to be no really wrong answers here cause gear is gear and when you bring the lights and audio
the one thing that makes it all worth while is a good story and a guy/gal who can put a lil spit on the ball and deliver.
As stated any new thing will get most people looking to try it and see what they can do with,,, HD today, SD yesterday,,,

The meat and potatoes is always gonna be your story...
And hey consider how we got it easy now compared to the days of Proscenium film making,, they did'nt even have a B roll to catch their breaths with..

That's what the film discussion, cinematography, screenwriting, and directing sections are all supposed to be for!
We have to face it, this is a gear-centric group. But gear only gets you so far, and film theory, character, structure, and all that other "stuff that people think they don't have to bother with" is far more important than any gear!
