my thoughts on HD

HD is a great tool but,its changed a lot of people to just think about equipment, instead of thinking of how to shoot it we think what to shoot it with,i think it would be really cool if we can talk about how to shoot films, and share each others ideas and learn the art of filmmaking and get really creative with what we have, learn to make a great movie with just a small camera, well you get my point,im not trying to go agianst anyone here,i just thought id share my opinion.what do you guys think?

It was true before HD too. Before that 24p was the feature you have to have to make a good film; before that it was a 3 chip camera instead of a one chip and so on. It's a continuing cycle. It's true that it's not the camera but the skill and I think this forum does a pretty good job as far as helping each other out like you mentioned.

I agree 100%. Take a look at the RED camera forum. A ton of users that believe that using a 4K camera will magically make their film better than the rest. Want a better film? Start with a good script then hire the best gaffer, DP, AC, etc. that the budget affords.

Note - Some of the RED users are not mindless zealots boasting about a number (4K). They actually understand the film making process.

When I read posts that are heavy with the tech talk I feel like I'm really low on the totem pole and try to keep up but I just don't retain all that stuff. I just try to shoot to the best of my abilities and the tech stuff I do learn goes right out the window during the actual shoot for some reason and I rely on my instincts to help me through.

It's just like going to a film festival, and seeing people with little, best buy consumer cameras. Oh god, there gonna lose this fest, I got a DVX, plus a boom mic, im gonig to kill them! But no i realzied that isn't true, because it's how you use it!

Im sure you guys know this, but im just saying what i realized the other day

Amen

Wait a minute, so HD won't guarantee me a Grand Jury prize at Cannes? Then why the hell did the salesman at Best Buy tell me that?!?!

:(

Well it's a given that tech alone won't make your film good, but neither will talking about how a lot of people suffer from gear lust instead of screenwriting fever. We have this discussion about once a year and while I agree that people don't put enough emphasis on story, talking about it in a thread will do nothing to change that. But we have dvxfest that provides a shred of balance to gear lust.

If you really want to see the effects of gear lust the marketplace is a cautionary tale. You can get great deals on lightly used and practically new equipment that was purchased at the height of gear lust.

That's the great thing

Now HD is a small camera. It is affordable and available.

J.R lets say im a millionaire and i buy the best HD camera there is,but have no clue what cinematography means, does it matter if its a great camera?
but a student that only has a small camcorder with great skills in cinema, and knows how to use the camera properly, who do you think can make a better film? although the HD camera will get amazing image quality, youll probibly get bored by the film in 5min

The millionaire would hire a great D.P.

Let me guess. You can't afford the camera you want.

If someone isn't taking the time to learn the art and craft behind the camera then that's thier loss and has zero effect on you. Everyone has a varying degree of Equip Envy; if I had the cash, you'd bet I'd be using a D20 or Red with the finest lenses while I honed my craft.

But I don't, so, I'll stick with my DVX100.

"To me the great hope is... people that normally wouldn't be making movies will make them and suddenly some little fat girl in Ohio will be the new Mozart and will make a beautiful film using her father's camera-corder and the "Professionalism" of movie making will be destroyed forever and it will finally become an art form."

Sorry for the stretch, I had to pull this link from the source code of where I found it because i didn't care much to link to that blog.
