My take on the Lumix lenses I've bought for the AF100 and GH2

Jim Arthurs: Truthfully, I like the fact that the 14-140 isn't too fast, for the mere fact that it's designed to be the solution for shooting on an AF which most resembles the run-n-gun style that we've become accustomed to on the 1/3" DVX and HVX where you didn't have any real shallow DOF to worry about, just the faux-shallow DOF when shooting at long focal lengths. Throw a Voigtlander 25 mm f/0.95 or an Olympus 50 mm Macro w/ adapter to bring it to 1:1 ratio if you want some nice shallow DOF.

I'm not sure why you're getting that aliasing, but a hard edge of black and white at a horizontal angle is the absolute perfect condition for aliasing to reside.

Saddler, I agree, for me the AF is not all about shallow DF. Coming from the XHA1, the AF w/ the 14-140 is an enormous upgrade in image quality and DYNAMIC RANGE!

Barry.... shove taken here is part 1 of our time in Nepal November/December 2010 with the GH1 and the 14-140mm & 20mm pancake. I would like to embed this and the other 4 parts of the Nepal trip, but for some reason I can't make it work????
but they are all on my vimeo for those that want to have a look.

Oh...I also posted a quick AF 102 test on there too.

Barry, great little review.

I ordered my Olympus 14-54 2.8~3.5 and my Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro as a one stop faster (more so on tele) alternative to the 14-140. On an narrative scenario it's basically covering wides to mediums with a single lens and only having to exchange lens for extreme close-ups.

The 7-14 really interests me since I love to play with extreme WA and perspective, shame the price and the lack of real need for this makes me postpone getting it.

And I also fell in love with the images the 20mm 1.7 produces... It's my next buy for sure.

The Olympus 14-54 2.8~3.5 seems to cover a nice range from wide to tele and resonably fast. I'll be interested to know how it performs.

Wow, nice! That was an unhacked GH1? It held up pretty well in most of the shots!

I spent some time in India and in south Africa, and much of this looks very familiar, and brings back some excellent memories. You're living the life, and thanks for sharing it, I'm sure you just made a whole lot of folks here quite jealous!

Thanks Barry for your comments and thanks for sorting the embed. Is there a tut on here somewhere on how to embed from vimeo for dummies like me???

It's effortless. Just click on the "filmstrip" icon in the new-post box (hover your mouse over it, it says "Insert Video"). Then it'll pop up a box, you paste in the video's URL, and it's done.

Barry, my GH2 arrived a few days ago and I've been out and about with it having a play. The 20mm pancake is indeed a thing of beauty and wonder and the more I use it the more I love it. For nighttime city shots it's the best thing I've ever had, I'll try and post a few of the rough-and-ready images I took yesterday.

Very impressed with the GH2, will take me a while to figure it all out but the video from it so far looks really nice.

Can't wait for the 14-140 to arrive though - not here yet :(

Also been playing with the 3D lens, working out how to use it within it's limitations (F12!). Pretty good initial results, much better than the 3D stills I have from the 3D camcorder, as I'd hoped. Early days for this technology though, lots to learn about it. Not sure how I share pics with people... ? :)

Cheers

Neil

Glad you're finding combinations that work for you -- so, yeah, share some pix! Just click on the little "Insert Image" button, and it'll let you upload a file right to our site here and embed it in your post automatically.

I love my new voigtlander nokton 25mm f0,95. Greatest und funniest lense ever, awesome! Buy or die! :D

I think the 100-300mm is a must have lens if you shoot some sort of wildlife.

Here some Monarchs. The 14-140 would have been way to short.

Most shots at 300mm

Thanks again Barry so simple here's part 2 Chitwan National Park, but maybe I should post these over at the GH1 site?

Barry
have you tested the new panasonic 14mm f/2.5. tiny little pancake lens by panny. i just looked at it at BH. it's nice but so tiny feels like a toy. also at that aperture the olympus 14-35mm f/2.0 seems like a better bet. any thoughts. i have to say though the image was great.
