I am having problems with the Motherboard... Every two days I have to re-flash the BIOS. Gigabyte says to RMA so I'll be getting a new one... hopefully I'll get more of a golden sample this time. Aparently many people have gotten fidgety boards like me but once you get a good one you should be good to go....

Aghhhh!!!

I got a 3.15GHz speed using low voltages and getting low temperatures!!!
I only kept this up cause I should be able to do it again... I hope
Room temperature of 27C I got 49C on the NorthBridge chip and 58C on both Cores on SpeedFan... not bad when the Core Duos are all rated at 61C! I'llget the NorthBridge lower with a $10 heatsink and fanthat I'm getting Friday 9th. The CPU voltage got increased to 1.375V from 1.3V, the RAM got increased to 2.1V from 1.9V and the chipset got increased 0.2V.
I will post my settings and once I get the wireless router. I will log onto one of these stress tester's servers so you can see that my numbers are legit. (The server connects to the software and sees the data real-time and records it). I will also post the total cost of the rig with individual prices for each item.

Here is the current component list:

_ Gigabyte GA-965P- DS3 Rev 3.3 Mother Board

Do not get the Viewsonic 19" (1440 x 900) I picked one up for $150 and it is going back tomorow, it is only 15 viewable and not very happy with cost to color. Great price though but Dells 20" are only $220 each!"

I just cancelled order for two 512MB chips as advised, aparently it would lower the bandwith and
make the system slightly slower (see my other thread) and saved $100 wich got me back on budget!

Also switched the power supply to a 600W Cooler Master

Oh, and adde a little 1GB SD card for $4.- :) !

I just read on Newegg that the E6300 has 64-bit support... so it isn't the chip that's gonna keep me from taking advantage of 64-bit stuff once it comes around... but only the motheroard and XP... so I sould look into a diferent motherboard right now then... right? that way I don't have to re-buy it...?

I love talking to myself! lol
I added a 320GB 7200.10 Hard drive

hope these cheapo $2 fans aren't loud but I went ahead and got
one 80mm fan to add to the front of the case by the hard drives and
a second 80mm fan to try to rigg it somewhere to aid exhaust in the back

That almost the same setup i have for my vegas system.

Core 2 Duo 6400
2 x DDR2 1GB
NVidia GeForce 7600GT

And it works awesome.

I have 3 17" Samsung LCD hooked up and a cheapo 64MB Video card for the 3rd screen.

I havent overclocked it, if i do i will want to water cool it.

I normally use email in the 3rd, but when im editing i have vegas in the middle preview on the left and folders / media on 3rd. makes it easy.

yea... I would love to keep this Viewsonic or something else that was a bit cheaper actually for folders.... 150 is too close to 220 for the quality and size difference
however I just got a desk for the station... and I would have to change that too! it was a pain to assembled it, and doubt thay's take it back after I did...

also, does anyone know of a good bluetooth mouse, i want a bigger one, this one hurts my hand after long sessions

I don't go with wireless. All the more for the processor to be occupied with which could be better-used in your editing.

I was thinkng about that... than you David for the comment!

ended up sqwitching my case for one of these CRAZY CASES...
I will have a "low rider" looking computer but the cooling seems right on... two hughe 120mm fans two in the front blowing through theHarddrives, one in the back (but in the top) and one hughe 200mm fan on the top... heat goes up... and I like the power supply being in the bottom for that same reason... I will add a 5th! 120mm fan onthe side vent to blow right onto the motherboard and make it a heavily positive system

Oh! and I'll rip those blue lights off first

haha thats the case i have at work on my editing system... its a good case but a bit loud.

I actually use a microsoft wireless laser mouse and dont have any issues with it.

I am going to put in a last order wich will include a better thermal compund that I'll use for the installation of the CPU cooling system and some sound deadening foam...

I might end up getting some Yate Loon 120mm fans wich are supposed to be very quiet... but first I'll wait and see if there are any wires I will be missing...

SVC.com has lots of gizmos and usefull stuff...

did you replace any of the fans or add sound insulation? what about the power source? which one do you guys have? do u know? I am very concerned with it being loud since it will be directly infront of my walk-in-closet/sound-booth

Its really hard to make a PC quiet--particularly once you have a RAID setup in it with lots of drives. I finally quit battling that and put the PCs in a room by themselves and then ran longer cables through KVM and KVM extenders. It took a bit of time to setup but the result was very quiet which is not only easier on the nerves but allows me to do voiceover work directly at my editing station because there is no sound there now. Just two monitors, keyboard and mouse which can control up to four computers thanks to the KVM.

oh... I see! KVM calbes... >>looking<<

nope, not gonna get those any time soon... waaaaay to expensive right now...

I'll just have to get a sound blanket or two, wanted a few anyway, and hang them over the door by installing some sort of hooks from home depot...

how's it going Richard!

"Keeping in mind relatively low influence of the cache memory size on the overall performance, we can state that for less than $200 you can get a CPU running close to a 1000-dollar model." Ilya Gavrichenkov www.xbitlabs.com

There are many people out there getting higher overclocks than I originally read about. When an IT friend mentioned the 1.86ghz duo was down to $200 and it overclocks easily up to 2.6ghz it made me decide to build the workstation now.

I spent all weekend online, placing and cancelling orders. I have cancelled about 6 already! I don't know it if is a bad thing, it surely can't be good for my credit, but I kept on finding better choices and saving money. Actually i didn't save money as I am currently $150 over my maximum budget, lol... but a Dell with similar numbers (I priced one out) would be about $4000+ I searched and read a lot about computers... something I hadn't really done --almost at-- all this whole year and I am delighted with what I have found the state of the bargains to be at...

I found several articles about overclocking the 6300 waaay up. I also found this neat little spreadsheet with the posted speeds of a big number of gaming enthusiasts that frequent www.hardforum.com (not a gay porn forum). I don't know the top claimants are exagerating or not, it sounds likely that they would want to, but the submission procedure seems ok... they ask for a screen shot of the numbers after running intensive process for four ours... then again, who is to say they actually did run it that long? or who is to say that none of these video-game playing uys never heard of Photoshop? ...but I have found corroborating sites for speeds "close" to the top when it comes to the 6300. I saw 3ghz elsewear such as this exellent article that you should read if you are considering OCing the 6300... and for me that's plenty! In the article it is mentioned that the main factor in being able to get all the 6300 has to offer is having the ability to raise the FSB frequency as high as possible... so now I have to see if my IT buddy picked the right MoBo for me... >> checking << aparently he did! there was a guy with a 3.4ghz screen shot using the Gigabyte he chose for me

If these numbers were true:
E6300s being OC up to 3.73GHz!?! that is a total of 7.5GHz!!! with a $200 CPU!
Unreal...

I'll shoot for 3.5, 7 total... we'll see how close I get. I'll be happy, and probably let it be, once I get to 6.0ghz, wich is the speeds I read about in many different articles and a few forums, and seems to be quite the attainable mark after spending some time (a lot of time) on the tweaking...

Go used for the KVM extender. I got mine off of ebay and it was just like this:

I didn't like the video result though so I just used two of these 50' VGA cables:

The price is not too bad on any of that stuff really. Trust me, your going to waste a lot of time and energy trying to make the computer silent.

My case has a slide-out MB tray:

Which I highly recommend, especially if you're a DIYer who likes to tinker.

guys, I thank you so much!!! as well as to my IT buddy!

My orders started shipping as we speak... the case will have a swing away door with a latch... I got the sound foam allready, and that extra 120mm fan wich is supposed to be silent that I got for the side vent will probably end up having more of it's btothers show up to replace the other fans if they are loud... I want to get the cables since they seem cheap, but I better build the thing first... lol...

aparently the gigabyte mobo and the 6300 are a perfect match... I am up reading about overclocking so that I know what I'm doing instead of just having my buddy tell me what keys to hit... hopefully the mobo's safety features will keep all of the components solid (as in not semi-solid) lol

David, I hope I am making you proud... I started asking you the dumbest questions a few months back, and now I can't get enough... I hope my interest stays the way it has been this past sleepless month cause I never ever payed this much attention @ school... lol

david what are the expansion cards u got there? the one in the lowest socket and the one above the firewire

The lowest one isn't anything -- it's just a hole to let the cords for two of the the case's front USB ports come through to plug in the back, as well as the front microphone and earphone jack cords.

As for the other one, I assume you mean third from the bottom? It's the 5.1 surround card.
