My station (project)

NEVERMIND:

with this little $20 card you can use your PCI-E slots (I have three empty) and a 7200.10 RAID0 would be working at full speed...

my optical drive becomes invisible when I turn on the RAID function so I looked around....

too bad I don't have more SATA power cables!!! I have two PCI-E cables for video cards that I'll never use...
video cards suck, I hate them, all they ever did to me was ruin a whole day having to get my computer ack to where it was!

Here is a great little post by one of the guys in the computer forum I've been hanging out at for this project:

" Programs like HT Tune report the average transfer rate of Seagate 7200.10 drives in RAID0 to be around 120MB/s.

While PCI does allow for a peak transfer rate of 133MB/s it is a shared bus. Meaning any PCI network controller, sound controllers and various other devices that use the bus must also share the 133MB/s bandwidth. So it is unlikely there would be 120MB/s of bandwidth to spare.

Because each PCI Express 1x slot has its own lane is has 500MB/s dedicated to what ever device is plugged into the slot. This means there is loads of spare bandwidth and a single slot can easily support more than 2 drives if need be!

PCI Express comes in a few different modes
PCI Express 1x 250 [500 both ways]* MB/s
PCI Express 2x 500 [1000 both ways]* MB/s
PCI Express 4x 1000 [2000 both ways]* MB/s
PCI Express 8x 2000 [4000 both ways]* MB/s
PCI Express 16x 4000 [8000 both ways]* MB/s
"

I have three PCIe 1x slots and one PCIe 16x slot for the video card.

Also, it seems most high wattage power supplies only have 4 SATA power connectors but you can use adapters off the normal 4-pin power connectors to add more.

Wow... only 120MB/s? it sounds slow... let's see, an 8GB P2 card fits 20min of 24PN 720p so:

8000MB / 20min = 400MB
400MB / 60sec = 66.6`MBps

That would mean that i would ony be able to preview two streams oh HD at the same time, and I'd be running 13.3MB over peak performance? That blows...
but when streaming three of them off a SINGLE 7200.10 with no FXs Vegas seemed very close to real-time preview... ?!?!? Are my eyes THAT slow?

Ok, so I am having a horrible time with the motherboard....every two days I have to re-flas the BIOS... aparently other people have had this problem but a quick replacement solves it... I must have gotten one of the bad ones... hey, for the price and the performance you get I reallyu shouldn't complain... wish I could afford a better one so as to avoid this hassle... Should have it by Friday

I installed the SATA RAID card and it semms to be working great... Rosewill RC-211... can't beat it for $20 and the peace of mind that you are getting %100 out of what your RAID can do

still have the onboard RAID ports open to use once I get my SATA optical (mobo can only see IDE port or the onboard RAID)

a 500GB is in line now... I'll switch the 320's to the OS and the 500's will do the source, the single 320GB will be storage and target... also did you guys know that third quarter the E6700 are supposed to go for $200?!?!? nice! I'll wait to see what happens to the price of Quadros then! :) then I'll switch to Vista... maybe

must sleep...
