My station (project)

shameless plug of your video, lol but I must be the worst thread hijacker ever, so can't complain, and I watched the whole thing anyway! lol

David, yes, this case is amazing, and the cooling is u-n-r-e-a-l... my system is idling at 23-28 celsius! but then en again i do have a monster of a CPU cooler: Rosewill RCX-Z775-SL that comes with a 92mm fan. It is straight out of the gaming and OC'ing comunnity.
However my system temperature is also at 30 celcius wich is darn good too. It also came with a black plastic bracket to mount a FOURTH 120mm inside the case at the end of the top internal bay. So once I stack up HDDs all the way to the 6th slot, I'll have one of the Yates in there, so as to keep lots of air flowing through the HDDS so the air stays cool, and so it comes in fast, so it can spread all ofer the RAM, video card, and my North and South Bridges.

the three 120mm fans come with little three speed switches

1172904406.jpg

and I must admit I don't mind the blue that much anymore... also, I did get a full set of Yate Loons to replace the fans because I initially thought the blue was horrible and didn't know that all I'd have to do is snip the easily accessed LED wires, and also because I heard that the case was LOUD, wait that was in this same thread, Webdog, you uses it at work right?

However, after switching the rear 120mm for a Yate

1172904541.jpg

and also listening to both plugged in at the same time, I found that the stock fans on MEDIUM blow a bit more air than the Yate does with 12 volts going to it. Also, they are just a hair louder if louder at all on medium... on Low they are completelly inaudible by air cooled case standards... and on HIGH you won't need towels anymore, just walk into the room, lol, they are overkill if you are not planning on overclocking your system...

the 200mm fan is amazing... a fan on the top of your case is a must... but a fan this big is perfect for the application... any hot air that makes it out of the stream is sucked out by this monster... and it is incredibly quiet, no high frequency fan noise at all from this sucker...

Webdog and anyone considering to get this case (BUY IT! :) ) I grabbed the little three speed switch and pulled it out through an expansion slot I left open for my video card to breathe better... Right now I have the Yate in there since I didn't feel like braking my back in half anymore today... Since the rear panel fan is the loudest, doing this and setting it to a very potent yet quiet Medium setting allows for your case to become noticeably quieter in under a minute

Oh, David, the door opens flawlesly time after time, so even though it can't possibly be as good as the case u r using (nice feature!!!) for accesibility, it sure lends itself for countless opennings though the day, in part thanks to the screws they used with hughe oversized and threaded heads...

Apparenty the NB and SB will get very hot too if I don't do something about it when I OC the board itself. For that I got a North Bridge heatsink, which it really a VGA chip heatsink that is known for being used as a NB cooler without any hassle (and super cheap!!!) It is called the Evercool wich gamers seem to rave about... heck $10 is totally worth the try when my NB is supposed to get toasty... and I got some heatsinks for the Video Card's RAM for $1.50 and a few that I'll try to add to the South Bridge since I haven't been able to find bigger heatsinks that fit on it...

so here are a few additional pictures for the heck of it:

sorry aout the bad photoshoot, but I don't have much control with my Treo, and those dam digital cameras are $200! do you know what I could get with that?!? lol
I love Friday night... lol

Ok, so I started overclocking tonight, but I should mention that I spent three sleepless nights reading up on overclocking. Also, it should be pointed out that the E6300 is an unusually easy processor to overclock, and that similar results are not to be expected with other Duos and most definitely not with older processors. Also, it should be mentioned that the other components are instrumental in achieving a stable and safe overclock. And I should also confess that if my IT buddy Tim didn't tell me what to get i would have needed much more of those nights watching the light creep in around the blinds.

I am happy to say that so far I have not touched the voltage! :) And so far (with limited stability testing) I have achieved A FULL GHz more than the stock 1.86 currently at 2.87GHz!!! from 3.7 to 5.7!!!!

Glen Chan made an important point by sharing several results from the same render performed in several different setups. You can find this post in a different thread here in the Vegas section named "Core 2 Duo 2.4 vs. Dual core 3.4..." Looking at the info it is completely evident that the 3.7 stock that I keep talking about is an understatement of the render speed in comparison to older processors in Vegas! Great news! I heard so, but I never knew it was such a hughe one!!! :love4:

As I wrote this, re-read the other post, and got a snack I reached the 429mhz FSB speed that put me at 3.00299GHz! I just ran Orthos wich tests duo CPUs heavily for 9min 35sec with no errors or warnings... I just started Prime95 wich has options to focus on the CPU or the RAM (or both)... I chose to concentrate of the ram since this speed put it past it's 800 rated speed, and is now running at 858... nothing should go wrong, the CPU can do much more than this, and I set the RAM's timing to a much higher (slower & more stable) 5-5-5-15 from the 4-4-4-12 setting that the motherboard wanted to run it at. These higher timings should allow my Corsair DDR2 800 to go up to about 1100 (I might actually find out :) ), so even though this isn't scary-high I would like to know it this is the speed at which I will have to increase the voltage to prevent memory dumps.
Increasing the voltage is the scary part of overclocking if not done with patience and informed diligence. Also, it shortens the life your equipment... but it is all going to be worthless waaaay before it goes kaput... so why not squeeze a few hundred bucks out of it now.

Anyway... I stopped it to submit this post so I can go to bed, cause overclocking for the first time when you are borderline delirious is a big no-no. It only ran for 4min but no problems...

Oh! I should also point out that the CPU only reached 43 celcius wich is suuuuuper cold... also the fan has an additional 250rpm left in it... like borat:"niiiceeeee..."

we'll see how it liked running like this overnight...

I went into the BIOS and tried 429 but it boot up running at 1.866... so it does need a little bump of voltage to the memory... I just tried 400 since that brings the memory to the 800 that it is rated at and VIOLA!!! 2.8 (2.79999) boots up without any voltage increase... I wonder it I should worry about the voltage so much... however it would be nice to know that you didn't raise it at all and you still have a much-faster-than-5.6GHz computer!

I just threw three streams of 720p at it, the bottom layer at 100 opacity, the other two at much lower opacity... they faded in and out and these fades overlapped, also the sound was panned front left front right and way to the rear on the surround sound panner... and also, one of these was spinning and floating around with track motion and color corrected with one CC FX to three different strong colors in the lows mids and highlights... all three shots had movement in them...

did it play smooth as rendered? nope, not close, but I could see what was going on!!! I think fully tweaked it might be able to pull that off!! 2.8 is far from the highest stable... but we'll have to press on and see...

BTW three streams with different opacities, all with motion in them, no video FX, three panned audio tracks, one of them floating and rotating with Track motion played very close to perfect, it was not batantly evident that it wasn't. Oh! and I have a vectroscope running, if that adds to it.

I got two Gigabyte boards, and had consistant problems with both of them. Stupid stuff like, the floppy drives wouldn't work on either board. Gigabyte denies any problem, yet the forums are full of folk with the same problem. Some resolved it by cutting and modifying the plug that goes to the board, and putting it on backwards. After that fiasco, I went back to Abit, and couldn't be happier.

I'm still up... :)

I heard great things bout this board but don't really know much about this stuff... this is my firsts OC

I kept going... I messed with the voltages... and I am up to 3.15 testing
CPU temp at full load with Orthos is 50 and the fan is close to max rpms

5min 30sec only, now switching it to test both RAM and CPU with no breather in between

ok... so I have been running Prime 95 up here at 3.15 (6.3 sounds so much better though)

I don't want to stop it because the longest you let it go the more reliable the test will be, but I want to see the result! and I amtired regardless of how exited I am...

Prime 95 is on it's 5th test only.... I messed with the voltages a bit more just to try to make this thing as stable as possible... I read of many different settings aroung these heights and it always comes down to your own particular setup because no two boards as I suspect no two chips are created equal... so they say in the gaming sites...
7th test... should we see? cpu is at a cool 41-43 celsius... but this is not the full CUP load test but a mixer... 8th... ok I can't wait... stopped it, looked and started it back up right away... 10 minutes no problems. now I am going to sleep for real...
but I left it running... a blend of RAM and CPU though, so tomorrow I'll do a long CPU intensive several hour test...

night night

it might be 3.14999 or how I like to call it 6.3GHz

then again, there is still more room to push... but I read about a few stability problems, and none at this speed... so why bother?
well... maybe :)

ok... 3.15 passed 2 continuous hours of a blend of Prime95 testing!!!
it passed 896K, 768K, 12K, and 14Ks all back to back... 2hz is a good indication that 3.15 might actually be STABLE!
... (for mee too)

it had less than 30 sec. before I threw it back into a Prime95 torture test, this time the opposite type concentrating on the CPU :)

back to sleep!

it passed a secont Prime95 test this time focused on the CPU... no errors or warnings! It finished the 8k, 10k, 12k, 14k, 16k, and I didn't let it finish the next... but I guess it would have been the 18k (not that I relly know what that means)

less than 30seconds and it was into an OCCT Ram and CPU test... it allready had the CPU running at 99.2%, and the temp is at only 46 celcius, nice

hahahha. great work Latin. sounds awesome. I bet that machine can do 4 streams all with cc and transparency in Edius. (at full resolution. no preview) that is if you hard drive can handle it.

hey latin. once you are done OC and making it stable. you should send me the link to those test programs and I'll run a test on my dual 3.4. then we can see how much faster your machine is. I think you are getting the best bang for your buck.

dude the HDD is the best part of the computer (so I am told, lol) I have to figure out how to set them up right, and when I get a second 500GB I'll set them up in a RAID 0 configuration... should be crazy fast.
I will test Vegas multiple streams with stuff on 'em as soon as I am done beating the crap out of it to make sure it is stable...

they aren't tests but torture machines... they just keep ur system at 100% for long periods and check to see if the data generated by thos exersises is correct...

just download Prime95, Super Pi, OCCT and ORTHOS... CPU-Z can show you your numbers in real time... all of them are freeware...

I can't wait to run HD in Vegas, I ran three streams when I had it at 2.8, they were severely messed with... and it was nice, not far from being able to do it... but defenitely not there

if you get a chance try the edius trial. (I think they give you the broadcast version on the trial) and see how it stacks up to vegas. For some reason I have it in my head the code in Edius is super streamed lined and can handle more Realtime streams with tons of effects than any other NLE within the same machine????
Maybe its just me.

no, a lot of people in this forum seem to agree, lots of people here in the Vegas section might agree too... I do like Vegas a lot though, and getting used to it is making me not even consider FCP and Edius... at least not till I am waaaaay more advanced in Vegas... and even then I'd probably still prefer Vegas because of all the tools and interface...

I will stop the testing now and try it out... then I'll have to reboot, and start running two Prime95s for 24hs straight with their priorities set to 10 and nothing running at the same time other than the temperature and fan controller

"they" say that is the best way to certify stability out there period... it will actually be running for 28hs straight plus the Vegas session... :)

I have a Dual Core Athlon 4800 + with 4GB of Ram . It edits real time DV without a hitch. We just purchased the HVX200 yesterday. I tested our first ever MXF files in Vegas 7and also some converted with the DV FILM Raymaker and the machine cant maintain real time preview in 1080i or 720!

We are looking for a powerful PC about $3000-$4000 any advise anybody?

The machine HAS to give us real time previews in vegas in 1080i. Were serious Vegas users and have 2 feature films for our copany to cut in the next 13 months in yes....DVCPRO HD, shot on the HVX, no less.

Is it worth going for a Quad core machine? Is it worth waiting, if sofor how long would you suspect?

Thanks in advance

ok... I have a crazy looking timeline infront of me... I was throwing clips around CCing them fading trak motion'ing... this looks great:

two 720p clips

_ clip one, track 1, fades in (standard fade) Color Corrected (saturation 1.583, low magnitude .729, mid magnitude .671, high magnitude .75)
_ clip two, track 2, cuts in, color corrected (saturation 1.222, mid mag .124, high mag .245)
_audio track 1 is heavily faded right and front
_audio track 2 is slightly faded back

the fade plus the two heavy CCs is jumpy, but after the fade it looks completely smooth to my eyes... can't tell if it is jumping

you can leave the CC out for cut editing and it should have no problem whatsoever...
it doesn't seem to mind the track motion as much as CCing... keep in mind I've been up all night, I did sleep 2hs. actually...
I will use this system and post here, so you could check back

ok, so I pushed a it more, but not the processor:
the FSB is at 450mhz wich makes the memory run at 900 mhz with a 1:1 ratio, since it is actually 800mhz rated I am worried about it going much higher... I did want to since the processor can handle it, but I thought that if I could squeeze 4-4-4-12 it might be faster since the current timings are "very loose" (that's what gamers say though)

if I was only thinking about building this for Vegas I'd probably just keep it at 5-5-5-15 and push the FSB further... right? anyone there? lol

I am testing the RAM briefly at 4-4-4-12 if it seems stable I'll render something and then press the FSB forward with 5-5-5-15 and render the same thing...
I have full confidence that 5-5-5-15 3.15ghz will be completely stable... anything beyond that will be marginal gains...

anyone? I should have written this whole thing better.... too exited/eager

3.325GHz with 5-5-5-15 why not... it has been running ORTHOS CPU intensive for 3 minutes now...

.35 GHz more is a lot to have for free... so I'll run the 24hs of Le-Prime on that CPU speed
