My station (project)

Well, bottom line, faster is better. A RAID 0 will help more than a little.

I just use non-RAID 7200 RPM drives, though, because I don't really need realtime playback at Best quality all the time. Preview quality is significantly faster and doesn't look much different from Best.

When you're color-correcting, you're most likely doing it with a still image, so Best quality will be the same no matter what your drives are.

When you're judging the timing of a cut, heck, Draft quality is good enough if it gets you real-time playback.

A time when you probably do want real-time playback at as good a quality as possible is when you're looking at a crossfade or other transition -- and most of the time, you're not going to need to have your color-correction, etc., enabled while you judge it, so you can just bypass those and get better playback.

Remember also that the size of your preview window affects your playback performance. Smaller = faster.

Also, match your timeline to your footage (frame rate, frame size, etc.0 for best performance.

Now, if you want full-screen real-time HD playback at best quality, well, you're going to need as much speed in as many places as possible.

Should I even get the 320GB for the separate Target and OC+programs HDD?

that and celulloid sounds like a great investment, but it won't affect my preview capabilities...

EDITED AFTER SEING YOUR LAST POST:

I shoot in my output resolution, frame rate and so on, yes...
I am shooting at at being able to preview color corrected 720p fades at pixel for pixel preview size... even 1080i
So I wonder, should I bother with the HDDs or will my CPU not be able to keep up regardless and getting a RAID
will not be a good investment right now... untill I get a faster setup?

I know to disable CC and other effects when judging heavy transitions... I learned that very fast on my Laptop... :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG
but I'd love to be able to have a "B" lister DP/director behind me while edditing project I acted in and produced
and for him not to feel like he is part of a school project. Not that I believe that computers slower than those wich
would be able to preview crazy stuff like that are toys, but these guys are spoiled to crap by thrie hughe budgets
and getting them to work with you requires finesse and a certain level of "confort" that they will not work without.

Also I am thinking that I am quite close to it... so if there is a piece that i am missing to get there or get very close to it, then I am willing to get it now.

In an ideal sitaution, your OS, media, and render target should all be on separate drives, and on separate channels. Having, for example, your OS and Media drives on the same EIDE cable means you're sharing bandwidth between the two.

I personally work with a lot of external drives.

Sorry David, I thought you saw the note that I was editing my last post...

I have 6 SATA ports on my motherboard... only two can be set up as a RAID
so I will be getting internals untill I fill up those... I do have an external but it is a USB 2.0 just to have extra space on the field than my laptop's two 100GB internals and to carry stuff around...

what kind of interface do your external HDDs use when u r editing?

Maybe I should get a big drive than is faster than 7200.10 to use as my source?
7200.10 for OS and storage...
7200.10 for Targed (sholud do just fine)
and faster BIG drives for Source... but the high RPM drives are so small...

I'm not saying you should use externals -- I do because it suits my company's workflow.

Four drives on separate SATA channels, and a RAID 0 on the other two, would be more than sufficient.

>FYI<

my Corsair didn't like running at 2.2v, it locked up my computer untill I lowered it to 2.1v... and tried it at 2.8GHz... that was after the first long Vegas session... guess Vegas does use RAM a lot... just not a lot of it

I'm climbing back up to 3.3 searching for the most stable settings... I will post those t the end of this thread... wich will come to an end hopefully very soon...

OK, as of this last edit I am back up at 3.325GHz and after stressing the CPU I am now stressing the RAM... no problems yet... this new voltage promises to be the last link in finding the stable 3.32GHz mark...

Ok, so I figured out that I could run a lower CPU voltage and get a 3.15GHz... why not try that? Now I am running 1.35V instead of 1.45V, big difference! The temperatures dropped significantly! I have been running Orthos for 1hs 30min and both cores have only peaked at 57 celcius... not bad at all... there is also CPU cooling out there that should get you two or three degrees lower! (kinda wish I knew about it when I got mine)

so longer lasting safer colder.... RAM is running fine

going to sleep, but the computer won't... I will let it run all night long... testing both RAM and CPU...

UGAfan,
ok so that's a 10,000 rpm drive, but super expensive and small...
do you mean I should use that one for my OS and programs to load them fast boot faster, and so on..? I'd much rather have fast Source drives and save money by using a slower small drive as my c:
I am not sure I understand what you are suggesting

David,
so should my first priority be getting a second 500GB 7200.10 and set both 500s on a raid 0 configuration?

load xp onto the 10,000 rpm drive. put the video on the 7200s. but yes, it is expensive so if cost is an issue here, don't worry about it.

Here's how I roll:

attachment.php

Which is actually true if you consider the mouse -- I have the same one, and roll it all the time.

sorry... I meant what kind of plug... firewire 800 I suppose right?

I understand any external HDD will not be a great idea for editing since they will communicate much slower with the system, I was just asking because I bought an external too, but to have on the field and to be able to "bring stuff with" when I go out of state... I got a USB 2.0 only because I really didn't need a faster one. Workflow, like you say dictates what's the best setup for you, and in this case USB 2.0's 480MB/s is all I need. I should have gone firewire though probably for the extra $50 since it is a 500GB drive... but then I'd have to buy a firewire expansion card for my desktop... and that's why I didn't.

I ordered an extra 320GB internal 7200.10 to use as the Target... I wish I could have gotten the extra 500GB also, but right now I can't...

For Celluloid, what pack do you recommend strting off with? Pack one is great aparently, but I am considering getting one more. Hollywood Now #1 looks great and very usefull. Any personal favorites?

NICE link David! what the hell is that guy working on? some sort of... I mean what?

They're all (except one) USB 2.0. The only one I've had any annoyances with is the Western Digital "My Book," and that's not a transfer problem, it's a spinning-up problem. Sloooow.

As for the ReelPaks, I personally like #2 the best -- I use those looks quite frequently (as well as Double Sunset from #3). But that one doesn't seem to be all that popular. A lot of people seem to like #4 and #5 the best. C'est la vie.

Yes! mee too!!! That's the one I have... that thing has the reaction times of the average FL voter...

Yes, I could see those trends... I REALLY want #3, but I can see myself needing to use #4 more often... I will start off with #1 and #5, then i'll add up #2 and I like some the idea of getting #3 before getting #5 to have variety...

Thank you David!

Oh, and thank you UGAfan for clarifying! your suggested use for the fast HD.
I will take that up into consideration... I came up with this idea:
Get one of those ultra fast suckers for the OS and programs, and then switch the two 320GB 7200.10 to a RAID 0, they could hold up to 12hs of HD, and use the 500GB as the Target and storage!

BTW I ran Orthos for 11hs and 40min getting breif and seldom 60C spikes... mostly at or under 58C
I'll try some cutting now...

oh! I got my WiFi card!!! I'm exited cause it is a PCI express 802.11b/g 54Mbps and it was only $30.. we'll see how good of a signal though...

sure enough, I am having problems with the driver instalation app. but there are many satisfied people out there aparently... also, I have XP Media Center 2005 with zero updates right now (no www no updates...)

Abit claims XP Mediacenter isn't XP... I guess pigs can fly also...
Anyway, don't get it if you have Media Center... but if you have Vista or other XP this thing can also work as an acces point!
I ordered a Linksys wireless router instead...

I ended up getting two 320GB 7200.10 to set up on a RAID 0 as my source, they'll fit more than 21 hs of HD (from an HVX when using PN modes), and the 500GB will be the target and storage of clips not being used...

yea... but I'll dump stuff out too... I stocked up on DVDs and I'll have to set aside time to Burn out stuff I don't need but want to keep... I have seen countless post by you and others saying that... I know... I might have to look into External RAID 0 enclosures and a Firewire 800 card or something like that... maybe a MotherBoard with more RAID connector pairs... I am exhausted, yesterday I found a little app called Coolbits... there was a little button called "Find Optimal" that set the clock and RAM on the card automatically... to make a long story short: my Hardware is %100 fine, my OS HDD is too, but I had to go get a Floppy drive to flash my BIOS wich apparently got corrupted!!!

As soon as my NorthBridge cooling system comes with UPS (anytime now) I'll install that, put it together again, flash the BIOS and go back to the settings that gave me that stable 3.15... oh! and I'm NOT overclocking the stupid video card... lol

BIOS flashed easily to F10 (latest revision) it took me a while but most of you do it yourselfers would have no problem getting the new BIOS in there in less than 15min.
after the re-flash the computer booted up %100 back to the way it was, as if it never happened

the North bridge cooler dropped the temperature by at least 7 celsius (for $9!) and now the dial is pegged on green, all is good in computer-land for me tonight...

Monday I'll get the wireless router wich will allow me to get all software updated and Celluloid and so on... wich will effectively completing the project. (That is untill I need something for a paid project that covers the cost of the updrade :) )

I'm going to bet your head will spin with how fast you'll use that capacity . . .

:)

Do you think I should consider getting an RMA for the MotherBoard to get one with more than just two SATA ports that can be set up as RAID0? I allready have a 500GB, if I got a second I would be able to set up .9TB to the existing .6TB as sources, use the other 320GB 7200.10 for a target and get a 10000rpm for the OS drive... all in time but I would get the most out of what I allready have down the line...

otherwise I'd have to sonsider an external RAID enclosure wich are affordable and mobile, that's a benefit for sure, but how would they plug in while editing? Firewire 800? that's 800Mbytes/s is that going to be enough to get the most our of a 7200.10 RAID0?
