My station (project)

oh, yea... I will be staying in the stereo world for now... I have enough going on

also, I would like to buy a tuner card first... I want to be ale to record our little stuff for reels and Michelle keepsbuging me cause when we moved in I purposedly left all TVs out of the bedroom now with the station there and the 20 inchers comming we could use them... later I want to get a cheap video card and a nicer big screen...

do u have any turer cards u've used before that u could recommend?

what r u doing up this early? don't u know waking upearly is bad for your health? lol I just noticed that u must have just woken up

It's 9:15.

I've never used a tuner card, so I can't help you there. I just run the cable through my deck and over firewire if I want to capture live TV.

ok... so I coud run through the HVX? no... no, so I would have to get a deck... and by deck you mean something like the canopus little white ~$200 box with s-video and component imputs?

Well, no; by "deck" I mean an actual deck, but anything which will accept video and convert to DV will do as long it has the correct inputs.

You could run through the HVX, but it doesn't seem like a particularly good use for it. :)

really cause that's what I got it for... :)

so just plug say coaxials into the HVX and firewire to the computer... turn the camera on switch to VCR mode and that's it?

David,
I know this is one of my dumb questions again:
what is I/O? :)

webdog,
that is a slight variation of the first case I ordered... lol, we must be case brothers or something
I remember you said the "low-rider" case we will both be editing on is a loud sucker, I suspect it might have to do with the big screened vent on the side... about a third of the side panel is composed of a griled vent...wide open for all of the noise to escape, so I will try the following:

first I'll put a 120mm quiet fan on it, aparently there is a spot for mounting a 120 on it... and once the fan is on I will use the sound-foam to cover the rest of the vent, and also line other surfaces of the box without hampering air flow
Then I will get into overclocking...
I should be able to get up to 3ghz without having to turn the side fan on, in wich case it will be acting as a smaller passive vent with the fan ready for hot days (or future chips since duos run super cold)

I am guessing that the bulk of the noice you speak of will be controlled like that... or I'll have to look into the sound blankets or the wires

That's a nice system!
That antec case is slick - to quiet it down definately put in some Yate Loon or silenX fans and perhaps hook them up to a fan controller to lower their speeds when required

You can also look at maybe installing anti-vibration mounts for your fans as well as accoustical foam (have a look at http://www.mnpctech.com/SonexWilltec.html to line the case with too (it'll spoil the look of the pretty window though - but stop noise leakage) :)

If you're looking to take the plunge into overclocking - I feel it prudent to let you know some of the risks (I noticed that you've been reading up on this - but if you get carried away - especially in BIOS overclocking - you can encounter problems)
While the results you see on the web are high, there's no guarantee that you will hit the same results- even if you have a identical system. It comes down to the process that Intel uses to grade the CPU's in terms of speed (google if you want more... I just want to keep it brief :) )

First and foremost, if you are doing important work on your machine, you'll need to really ensure that your overclocked system is rock-solid stable - there's nothing worse than your system crashing (due to instability) when you're rendering - I've had THAT happen a couple of times too many in the past! :crybaby:

Easiest way to do this is to run stress applications like prime95 torture test and OCCT for a decent amount of time once you feel you are at a decent level to stress the hell out of it while monitoring temps/voltages with an application like speedfan.

Keep it under 60degreesC if you can :)

Also - Heavy overclocking/overvolting will kill your CPU faster - especially if you are restarting/switching off your PC every day (cycling leads to "microcracks" in the siliconand can(in some instances) kill a CPU rather quickly - see my Pentium D 3GHz that ran at 4.42GHz for 6 months before dying)

It's an oldie, but this guide covers the basic theory behind overclocking which got me started :)

Hope I've been some help - flick me a PM if there's anything I can help with :)

you are right... I kept on reading today and talked to my it buddy who gave me a "wow wow wow... slow down dude!"
it seems 2.966 is rock solid stable... and I am overdoing the air cooling

I am going to switch all the 120mm to Yate Loons and will look into the 200mm fans that are quietest... the CPU cooler I ordered uses a 92mm but I just might get a hughe heatsink that takes an other Yate 120mm... we'll see how loud the 92mm is since they are supposed to be audibly quieter than 80mm

I don't think I'll need to use foam on the window, and I don't mind that look at all, (I do hate the lights!) I might end up covering it anyway if I can hear the difference from my sound booth with the "Bello Nero" Ocktava hyper... and since I might I am allready looking for a good hardware fan controller, I'dlike to get a 5.25" with five knobs so I can quickly turn the two front 120s the rear and side 120s and the top 200 down and back up between takes, all without running software that will use up CPU resources and bug the crap out of me.

I will be safe and OC slowly and carefully... inching up a few MHz at a time
and I will look for hardware that can monitor temperature with three or four sensors inside the case, and I'll get a nice temperature time and date clock on the wall for ambient temperature readings...

Nice!

Well good luck - If you are after a quiet cooler - perhaps look at something along the lines of the thermaltake big typhoon or a Noctua NH-U12 cooler - both run quiet and will give you performance that can equal or better low-end watercooling anyway - just be sure to check stability once you're at your overclock :)
(by the way - speedfan reads straight from your CPU and motherboard sensors anyway)

Definition of frustration:

To get every single component you need to fire up your new workstation and be able to start loading software onto it untill the case comes in and plug every single wire with great care... scared to break anything... AND TO FIND OUT THAT YOU GOT A DEAD POWER F@#%! SUPPLY!!!

beer, I need beer!

nope... that's life though...

I am getting tomorow 99%... the real one that is...

this POS I mean PSU... lol had terrible reviews, and not knowing I selected it late in the night after picking everything else... Newegg agreed to RMa it before they even shipped it so I asked Tim (figured I'd give my IT buddy's name after so many mentions) what to get... I ended up purchasing a True Power series... I think a 650W and for $105 before taxes...

case won't arrive till Thursday/Friday (it is comming from Miami) wich I find ironic since the thing practically has SPINNERS
I wonder if I'll be able to snip the LED wires easy or not... could that render the fan dead?

I bargained with Dell for a good 20 minutes and I got them to give me a $50 cupon to be able to get the 22" monitors instead of the 20.1"
the difference is BIG... unfortunatelly they were $110 more a piece, so the $50 only made me feel better...
$170 more for the same amount of pixels but bigger ones... same contrast and brightness

Its Alive, Its Alive!!!

I am actually very happy with the looks of it, even with the lights (not as bright to the eye)... those will only come off when I change the fans, wich came with little speed switches with three settings... I'll calle them "silent" "audible" and "too audible"... so when I overclock I will want to be feeding them the full 12 volts... so it might not be a bad idea to steal those switches and add Yate Loons... we'll see how anoying the "too audible" turns out to be down the line... also without the OS running I saw the temperature at 17 to 29 degrees with the cpu fan barely moving at 800 rpms and completely silent.

The fan on the top is HUGHE!!! and super silent, it is a great idea!

Nice Latin,
If you can put hydraulics underneath, then maybe you can make it jump. hahahahha. Just kidding.
Sorry to hear about the DOA power supply. that sucks.
The system looks great. good work.!!!!
:)
