My review of the D750

Its about a year after everyone else reviews. But I like it so what the heck :)

(Please note that youtube compression has not been kind. There are zero, and I repeat, zero artifacts or blocking in the original file.)


Pros:

  • Color
  • Dynamic Range
  • Efficiency
  • No Moire
  • Features
  • Stills
  • Full Frame
  • Audio
  • Build
Cons:

  • No Peaking
  • Cant resign focus magnification
  • Long flange distance
  • “Only” 60fps (though super clean)
 
i have been thinking long and hard about getting this camera. I am currently shooting a D7100 and all but one of my lenses are FX lenses. My thought was to get the D750 as my primary camera and use my D7100 as my B cam. The other thought is to get another d7100 and invest in a few more lenses like the DSO FF58, some other russian lenses and maybe a Zeiss.

focus/stability is off in many shots. drove my eyes crazy. but its something that I really notice. difficult for me to finish watching but very useful info. sorry I hope I dont offend. did you shoot all footage with the 24-120?

The focus and stability isnt off, its just like I intended, so no Im not offended :)
No, not all footage is 24-120.
 
Check prices around the globe. I think Nikon has began to heavily discount it with the 24-120 lens combo.

I wonder if upping the resolution in export to 4K then uploading the 4K file to YT might help with that for when people view the 1080 image?
 
I really liked my D750 with 24-120 in every way but sent it back as it could not quite shoot Video as clean as my A7s in poor low light.
Even ISO 6400 at F7.1 was a little like it was shot in a fog.
Of course this camera shoot stills much better than the Sony, but 99% of my work is indoor Video without additional light allowed.
I am hoping the D500 will do better for Video as I hate the A7 series except for the Sensors and 28-135 Cine lens.
 
i get it If you need that much lowlight. Personally I would rather deal with it some other way like faster lens, more light, NR, etc than to resort to lower DR.
But Im a bit of a DR junky.

A faster lens is no help, if you have to use f/8. I need that DOF.
 
If you need that DoF, I think you're using the wrong camera.

My RX100 IV has a 24-70mm equivalent f/1.8-2.8 fixed lens. With a 1" sensor, at f/2.8 you have the same DoF of f/7.5 on FF. And it's reasonably clean at ISO 1600 using cine4 or something like that (not slog2, which needs to be overexposed).

Shooting 9mm f/2.8 ISO 1600 on the RX100, you get the same DoF, FoV and exposure as if you were shooting 25mm f/7.5 ISO 12800 on a full-frame camera.

I shot this piece (that's my family having fun last xmas) with the RX100 IV at ISO 1600 with cine4 profile.

Beware: the RX100 is ridiculously small, if you have ever complained about the size of camera controls, this is probably not the camera for you, hold it before you buy it.
 
Hey @Lobbamobba , I've a D750 which I mainly use for stills, and have a GH4 for motion. Just curious to know how you set the D750 up sharpening wise, do you leave some on in the camera profile, or is it all applied in post, and if so what settings are you using ?

I use the FL in its default mode. Top notch imo.

Nice shot of Kodiak. Yeah the d750 has some decent dynamic range, especially when shooting pictures. The Flat profile works pretty well. I personally like using it with a tiffen low contrast filter, helps with the darks while preserving the highlights.
