Since coming from the 5D mk3 to the C100 I've been at a loss when it comes to zooms. I just will not allow myself to buy the 17-55mm due to the bad build quality and sloppy (worst of all the canon zooms?) focus ring and everything else is tailored for full frame.

But based on the seriously high recommendations from this forum and the fact that it is so cheap, I decided to just buy the damned thing!

All of my footage is filmed with the 24-105mm, my filming partner was using a Zeiss 35mm f2 and the Tokina 11-16mm. We filmed this before my C100 ZFinder came in and I was handheld (with the Zacuto target shooter) so focusing wasn't that easy. I put red peaking on max to stand a chance with the C100 EVF but sometimes it was ever so slightly off...

The C100 Zfinder really really helps and even though it makes the whole rig harder to handhold - due to the weight shifting forwards - it's worth it.

Anyway the lens. Ok I guess you guys were right :)

I had avoided it for so long due to personal prejudices. It was always the 'old' lens, with the crappy noisy IS.

Ultimately though, it is what it is. The IS might be old and noisy but it does the job. It's really sharp and when you get bokeh it's nice and smooth and tidy. The 70-105mm range is more handy than I thought it would be and you can see me making full use of it zooming into the models for a close up.

Even if I do get a 24-70mm 2.8 mkII i'd still keep this lens, which is rare for me as I usually don't keep lenses which overlap so much.

As much as I'd love to be using a 2.8 zoom and something a bit wider, I can see that this lens is really going to be my standard workhorse for so many things.

I will say however that if I didn't throw a Switronix LED Bolt light on camera I would have had serious issues with a f4 max aperture. On the plus side, even an on camera fill light is a huge improvement over a fast lens with no light. Keeps the faces from looking flat and adds nice highlights to the eyes.

What are your thoughts? Can anyone pick the 24-105mm from the 35mm Zeiss (when I haven't messed up my focus!)?

One thing is really annoying with the 24-105. When you are let say at 5.6 at 24mm, if you zoom in at 105mm, you loose at least 2 stops even if it says you still are at 5.6.
So if you are shooting in motion and don't want to see the horrible diaf clicks to have the right exposure, you have no choice to be underexposed !
Damned.
Do you know a lens which could avoid that ?

Someone on this forum mentioned even the 24-70mm mkII loses half a stop at the long end. I guess most still lenses would suffer the same fate, along with them being varifocal and suffering some focus breathing.

It actually about 2/3's a stop. Even so, the 24-105 and the C100 play very well together.

+1 on Dustylense - I've measured it on a WFM at 2/3 stop too. Quite frankly, it's easy to cheat it in post.

I prefer to use 5.6 rather than wide open, just to sharpen things up a little more.

The #1 'love button' for the 24-105 is that it's so near to being parfocal (especially at f8) you can cheat the occasional 'creep zoom'.

It's everything that the 18-135 isn't: old fashioned, reliable, good for video, easy to live with, well built and with forgiving IS.

I love the Canon 24-105 F4 L. For now it's the most versatile lens I have. As for losing light it's a non-issue for me. Super easy to adjust in post and it's very slight at 2/3 of a stop. (Thanks Matt) and if you set your focas at 105mm then reframe on the fly it's parfocal. Try. It will make you giggle. You have to set your focus at 105mm otherwise it wont work.

+1 for the 24-105mm. I don't think it's left my C100 since I got it. Change your ISO on the fly while recording if light loss becomes an issue. This cam + lens setup rocks for anything run n' gun!

I just bought my 24-105mm and love it!

Probably the best lens combo for my C100... and easily the most versatile for me.. I do a lot of outdoor video work.. adventure films etc.. so this is the perfect setup. The constant f4.0 is pretty handy too.

these are a couple frames from a trip I just came back from..
