My reasons not to buy A1

Fair enough, and I know I am retreading old ground. Sorry about that. You're right, though: The 16:9 and 20x are sweet. I probably like having that more than I'd miss the superior zoom and focus on the DVX. Add to the mix my desire to have the HDV option, and I am definitely leaning towards the A1.

But, no clients pressuring me, or paying me for use of my tools (heh heh), so I guess I'll sleep on it.

After downconverting some A1 footage in Toast Titanium 8 to DVD. It still looked great on an HDTV at SD resolution! SD may be with us for quite a while!

This article explains that there are two versions of DVCPRO HD ( prosumer DVCPRO HD is not the same as varicam DVCPRO HD) and how HDV is comparable to the prosumer DVCPRO HD.

Article's wrong. The format is absolutely identical, there is no such thing as "prosumer DVCPRO-HD" or "VariCam DVCPRO-HD". There can be a dispute over whether the HVX is delivering enough info to saturate the frame with detail, but there is absolutely no justification in implying that there are different levels of the format.

My mistake. It just says the CCD size on the HVX is different than Varicam, although the author implies theres a quality difference. Not two versions of the codec.

I switched over from DVX100a/Sony VX200 to Xh-A1/HV20 for my business.
There is a world of difference between these cameras.

I had some buyers guilt before I started working with the new cameras, thinking it wouldn't be much of an upgrade. All of my worries have been erased and my expectation have all been met.

When watching the footage on my Cinema Display or HD tv, I am in awe. Kills the DVX100a. On a SD tv, obviously the differences are pretty minimal.

It should be noted that I had to do major upgrades to my software/hardware setup to accommodate HD. I switched from G5 dual to Mac Pro 3Ghz and got Final Cut Studio 2. This probably wasn't completely necessary, but if you have a steady workload it's a must.

AloysiusK, what are you watching on the HDtv - the video straight from the camera, or the video after editing? If the latter, how are you getting it from computer to tv? Tnx.

The Mac Pro graphics card allows me to have 2 monitors on the same card. So one goes to 23'CinemaDisplay and the other goes to to the HD LCD TV(Via DVI out from computer to HDMI in on TV). It's simple. You can edit on one monitor while the TV shows the footage full screen. It's so awesome!
