Wow Dylan, great post. Let me try to answer where I can.
Our current deBayer was in fact designed for monitoring, not recording, but it is definitely more than a half-deBayer. DeBayer algorithms have many, many parts to them and there are lots of different approaches that can be taken. Our current one is actually pretty good, but we do plan to improve upon it. We have an engineer dedicated to it right now. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the subject.
We are also lookig at an option for a deBayer which is optimized for the FS700's 2K mode. This would be designed to alleviate some of the issues people have seen. This is still in a developmental stage so I can't promise how well it will work or even if we will ever release it. Trying to fix an issue later down the pipe is like trying to take salt out of your soup. Not too easy, but we're giving it a try.
thanks, Mitch. and, wow, great reply!
not sure if you saw my follow up post above, but yeah, I amended my original statements to say that the 4K raw downconversion for monitoring does in fact look pretty good. the 2K raw debayer for monitoring was more what concerned me (purely, for the sake of pixel-peeping clients) but I certainly understand the challenges involved in unsalting the soup ; )
and I'm also very glad to hear 4K XAVC isn't ruled out. I think that would really position the FS700 nicely in the F5/55 family. and I'd love to see the O7Q become the Swiss Army knife of recorders.
the only other question I have is whether CD is working with Avid to get native DNG support? that would do A LOT to "normalize" and simplify the workflow (as it did with Red and others.) thanks for all the answers and your participation in this forum.
