Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8

Too bad it's not mine. Still, made great use of it on a few shoots.

I feel like it could look silly on this tiny camera but thanks to the support rig actually looks pretty darn cool.

silly question but do zoom lenses like these keep focus and aperture unlike the kit lens? I need a good zoom solution for those 70's kung fu zoom in shots.

I can see you got that Rode mic on top, plugged right into the GH1. Hows it doing for location sound?

No Mr Fanny, 35mm lenses work differently than true film lenses, so there can be no calibration of the zoom without a focus pull. I'm 95% sure of that...

It keeps constant aperture but not focus. It's too huge to get a good zoom with anyway, the zoom requires sliding the focus ring along the lens, and it isn't always smooth...which might not seem like a problem for some zoom looks but on a lens this long is.

Good enough to sync the boom-mic to. Also not too bad in a pinch when you just need to hear things but quality isn't a huge issue (for recording lectures, presentations, etc.)

One more thing Ben: which adapter did you use and does it allow for aperture control? Ok that's technically two things...

darn...so my only option is to get a tv zoom for this effect? in what mount do they usually come in? im guessing some weird tv mount..ha

Nice Ben B, yes back in the day when we used 35mm adapters this was my go to lens. Super sharp, for a zoom it holds it's own to even a Zeiss 85mm prime.

Yes, please post pics or samples with your GH1. :)

Used it mostly to have to avoid moving the camera around the rows of the classroom...was easier to keep on the perimeter. I wish we got more takes of the telephoto shot down the hallway....the director was pretty set on a backward tracking shot which I got, but I prefer the look of the telephoto shot...it's a classic.

Thanks, Ben. One more question: What adapter are you using to connect the Rode Videomic to the GH1? I've had issues with the adapters I've tried and would really like to find a short cable if possible to relieve stress on the camera mic port. If not that, then a "hard" adapter that actually works would suffice.

Ron

It's a "hard" adaptor from RadioShack. Most of the short cable ones are designed for cellphones and aren't wired right. Just go to RadioShack and tell the guy what you want to do. I actually had somebody bust my first one on set, but luckily the pin just bent and didn't break off inside the camera, nor did it damage the inside. I am religious about unplugging it when I am not near the camera or when the camera is off the tripod.

As a cheaper alternative to this Nikkor lens, if you are using FD adapter to GH1, I have been using CANON FD mount TOKINA 80-200MM constant F/2.8 and if you can find one in a mint condition, it is a fantastic lens for the price. Also I just bought FD mount SIGMA 24-70mm constant F/2.8 off ebay. I cannot wait to receive it!!

Nice. Yeah this Nikkor goes from anywhere from $850-$1200. Like I said, it's not mine, but the the person who owns it actually got it hand-me-down for free, mint condition...how cool is that?
