My new compact DIY hand held rig

I have been looking for a light and compact rig for some time. I did not want a shoulder rig. For me a shoulder rig is too heavy and takes too much time to set up. What I wanted was a rig I simply could put into the camera bag without removing anything. I also wanted a horizontal hand position instead of a vertical with a more correct balance point.

I made a small frame of aluminum and a hand grip of wood and painted all black. The top handle is connected to a flash shoe and can be removed to use a light or a monitor instead. The shock mount is from K-Tec.

I use a Marantz PDM661 (with Oade Brothers super mod) and a AKG CK93 hyper cardioids mic. The wireless receiver is a Sennheiser G2. To change the battery of the receiver I have to remove the lens. This setup works with the 20mm pancake but not the 14mm pancake lens.

I also made an attenuator to feed the camera. This is a 55 dB L- Pad. It consists of one 100Ohm resistor in series and a 56kOhm in parallel. I have not tested this enough to tell how well it works. The levels on the PDM661 and the camera match more or less.

Thats way cool.
We made a couple these up for some productions and they worked out very well

I looked at your rig a couple of weeks ago and I believe it was your film that inspired me.

It feels much more natural to hold the camera in a horizontal grip.

Our cages sure saved the GH1 on a 21 day production. I dont think they would have survived without them.
I prefer to use my grips horizontal as well. I find it easier to roll my thumb to turn the follow focus.
