My Great Debate

So heres my problem.

I have a Sony HDR-FX1 but i don't really like it. personally i don't like the layout of the camera. also i don't really love the SD quality in comparison to the dvx i used to have. so right now im thinking about switching back and getting a dvx. but im not sure if i should. also i hate the 4:3 aspect ratio so i think i would want to get a 16:9 Anamorphic Lens Adaptor.

so if any one can lend some guidance it would be much appreciated.

Dont get the adapter. Its just too much hassle. Why not wait till the HMC-150 comes out? Then you can have the DVX AND HD and 16X9 :D!

Just grab a sharpie and draw two black bars on your lens. That leica glass really bonds. Those squeeze and letterbox modes are just workarounds anyway.

If you want to get rid of the sony now, why not an HVX?

Why does every one poopoo on the anamorphic lens? whats wrong with it? i hear its not a zoom thru so could you just sit on a med wide shot and just rove around?

Then your going to want to get the HVX lol. Or, wait a year and pickup a Scarlet from red. 180fps man.

Altho the DVX can be great for action sports, just take a look at some of my stuff.

Still, I'd wait and get a HMC or HVX.

i would love the HVX but i cant afford HD.
i mainly film action sports

I imagine come this fall you'll be able to buy a used dvx for pretty darn cheap. Or if you're prepared to drop the 2500 or so that a dvx costs now, that hmc-150 shouldn't be that much more expensive.

I guess it just also depends on exactly HOW sick of your sony you are. It's still a decent camera that you can get some good footage from.

Im pretty sure they said under 4500...so that could mean 4499 or 4000 i dont think anyone knows for sure yet....

Does this mean that the SONY HDR-Fx1 is only 4:3, can you not change the settings to turn it into 16:9?

It is zoom through, just not for the entire range. I believe at the wide end it either vignettes or has too much distortion to be usable. People have issues with the anamorphic lens because it is hard to focus. It focuses the vertical and horizontal parts of the image separately. So to get a sharp image one has to find the focus with the adapter on horizontally, then spin the adapter 90 degrees and find the focus point for the vertical axis, then stop down until one has enough DOF for both of those points to be in focus. That sounds like a hassle to me and would seem to make getting anything like shallow DOF hard.
