GH3 My GH3 With My New Carry Speed

Nice mod of the mod John :)
I didn't think of removing the rubberpart from the baseplate and glue then both together as you did. I'm gonna do that now :)

Looks great! I'll have to try doing as well.
John, what's that red plate that you used to cut out a section for increasing the height of the pad, is it hard plastic or soft like the original pad?

It is a thin plastic cutting board as suggested by PatrickN. I got a 5 pack at Target for $10 and cut up the red one. It is a hard plastic on top with raised rubber ridges on the bottom.

VF-4 won't fit inside FHUGEN Honu GH3 cage

VF-4 won't fit inside FHUGEN Honu GH3 cage

I have the FHUGEN Honu cage, and there is not enough vertical space to fit the VF-4. I suppose you could use their long bracket and mount the VF-4 under the cage.

Just wondering if anyone has tried this with the cage for the GH3:

I'm wondering if the thickness of the cage would provide the needed lift to make it fit without jamming?

The normal bracket should be able to easily fit that cage. I use the VF-4 with the standard bracket below the iDC System Zero Follow Focus and it fits and it is much thinker then the baseplate on that cage. See this video:

Tight VF-4 fix

Tight VF-4 fix

I took a Dremel and shaved about a mm off the raised VF-4 "badge" on top of the loupe. This is what makes contact and tight fitment on the GH3. Does not affect peformance in the least. Resale value? Maybe.... but not too concerned as I am quite happy with this camera setup.

The loupe is essential. The usefulness of the EFV on the GH3 alas, is crap what with the weird fisheye softness that the EVF diopter creates. It is the diopter that is the weak link.

On a similar subject....The other day I was shooting with my lonely HVX and could barely shoot with it using the eye piece EVF! The difference is stark with the GH3 and the VF4 and I am amazed at the leaps and bounds tech has taken in the video industry. Dynamic range between these two cameras is night and day.:)

I was able to get the original screw to fit (about 1 1/2 turns) with my shimmed baseplate. I wanted a better fit, as I thought this limited connection would be prone to stress when mounted on a tripod. So, I bought a longer screw and trimmed it to length. Not necessary for hand held use, but I think its a cheap safety net for use with a tripod.

Anyone with the VF-4 and Honu cage? I would love to hear if they can work together with the VF-4's plate under the cage.

The tripod mount on the cage is offset to the rear of the camera's tripod screw. See this photo:

Therefore, the VF-4's plate would be pushed rearward as well, meaning that the loupe may not sit flush with the GH3's LCD screen. I see that the VF-4's plate has some front/back adjustment, but it's hard to tell if it's enough from the pictures to get the plate (and thus the loupe) to snuggle up to the GH3's screen.

Anyone with actual experience with both items?

I don't have the cage but I took a quick image with my phone to show it attached to my GH3 and I can't say for sure it will fit since I don't have the cage but.
as I see it I could have the quickplate aprox 10-15 mm ( probably more like 10mm+) further back and still have the Carry Speed right up to the lcd. So is the tripod mount on the cage is less then aprox 10mm mm further back from GH3's tripod mount It might fit.

But don't take my word for it since I just speculate

I would like to know the same thing. Most people I talked to only tried attaching the loupe to the camera itself and gave up since the camera would no longer fit in the cage. Surprisingly nobody seems to have tried putting any type of loupe on the outside of the cage. Since many loupes are designed for larger cameras and don't fit the GH3 perfectly I would think the extra space the cage adds to the bottom would be a huge help. Never really thought of the mounting screw sitting back further however.

My guess is that the VF-4 baseplate will mount below the Honu cage and allow the loupe to used. I used the have my VF-4 installed under a iDC SystemZero and it fit fine.

@PatrickN: Thanks. The photo gives a better idea of what we're working with.

You would need the long (battery grip) bracket to try mounting the VF-4's mount underneath the cage. I have the VF-4 and the Honu cage, but I don't have the long bracket so I can't confirm it would work.

So the standard bracket will not allow the loupe to raise up to the LCD screen if the VF-4's baseplate is mounted under the Honu cage? How thick is the cage's bottom? It seems like there would be enough vertical adjustment with the standard bracket to clear the cage.

When you attempt to mount the loupe with the baseplate under the cage, how far below the top of the LCD does the loupe reach when it is as high as it will go with the standard bracket? Pics of the setup would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

@Jive another image from my phone.

I'd say you have aprox 25 mm to play with so unless the cage adds 25 mm standard VF4 is fine

A lot of discussion about VF4 compatibility with the Honu cage.

I can't get a tight fit, there's some room between the two. It's an issue, definitely. So far though I just tighten it between EVF and base plate and it works fine, looks silly though.

Here are some pics.

@Qatastrophe: Thanks for the pics. The gap is a problem, but at least the standard bracket looks to be tall enough.

Seems like you need some kind of tripod camera mount adaptor plate between the cage and the VF4 quickplate to get a thight fit then.
