MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED

it's my first real filming experience with dvx100b. I love it so far, it's everything I thought it would be! I still have a lot to learn about lighting and stuff, but the panny makes every shot look like gold without a lot of configuration anyway. We're kind of going for that naturalistic look, so it works. And I know the audio sucks in some places... we didn't always have a boom guy, so sometimes we had to improvise (with sporadic results)

It moves kind of slow. Yes, pauses can be awkward which can be comedic gold (a la "The Office"), but they have to be selective and often can be helped greatly by careful editing.

And the hand-held camera was a bit shaky and off-balance. Use a vertical element like a door frame to keep your shots from tilting too much. A shoulder-mounting rig can also help the shakiness, but still allow you to work free from a tripod if that's really what you want to do.

You are right about the audio being sporadic... and sporadic audio makes for a sporadic production. Sometimes it's best to delay the shoot when you don't have the crew... or find some one else to jump in and help.

Were you using the zoom control, or did you go manual?

i think he was usuing autozoom based on the info u guys say about 24p being slow to focus( dont have my dvx as yet). I really liked the story and the actors. as CV2 said it is slow in areas which can be tightened up with smart edits. it wud be so much funnier :).

I also like the handheld office feel...zooms and whatnot...but u need to focus it better. for example in the cafetria with when we saw cassie again u zoomed to her but the focus did not get a chance to settle on her so we cud see, yah dig :)

we need not speak about the audio cuz thats obvious and acknowledged by u already.
but it was funny over all...i liked it. i like the characters... lookng forward to seeing more stories around the other characters in ur upcoming episodes.

Luved the supermarket scene ...LOL.....however between cuts the people in the background disappear and reappear. i know this cant be helped cuz ur shooting in the supermarket and dont have control over the people cuz they arent ur actors (guerilla style thing) but it is sumthing to consider in the future.
The jogging scene definately cud use like a rocky theme style music...not particularly rocky just that vibe and u abruptly cut it when he says " oh god" lol . watch ur exposure..that scene was really blown out. i luv the girl doing her thing on the bench..LOL. u hav a nack for comedy man :)

oh...i think the cassie girl is the weak link in the acting. the others are pretty solid. good foundation to build stories around

I really liked it. You should focus on the other guy and the girl more, it would make the show more interesting. It was funny though, and yeah I have my speakers on max volume and I can barely hear, but beside that great work.

just put up the second episode today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaKU2Ejs1V0

still a few sound quirks, but we tried to incorporate a lot of the comments you guys gave us, especially about pacing and music and all that stuff. The only problem I can't seem to get around is having all my shots blown out... I obviously don't have a lighting kit/background but I didn't realize it would be this bad. Any advice for how I can avoid overexposure in the future? I had zebra on, but I just had to make-do because it seemed like I had a choice between either too dark or way overlit

thanks guys

story and alot was done well,
but i thought some shots lasted too long, or were too phony.

it was confusing because i couldent tell if you were going for the "this is us filming actualy people" feel or the skit feel.
comprendo?

no hate though, it was funny

Yeh, I like these episodes. It has potential. I think they'll get better as you go on.

Observations are just the same as everybody: get that camera level, really tighten up the editing (got to make it snappy, the faster the better), got to get better sound.

Not sure what you were saying about overexposure. Sure, there are little highlights here and there that are overexposed, but the faces look pretty good for not doing any lighting, and getting good skin tones is the most important thing. Don't worry about overexposing unimportant areas of the frame, there's nothing you can do about that with the resources you have. Obviously, stay away from shooting at really bright windows, but other than that, it's good.

What scene file settings are you using. The only thing that might help only slightly with overexposure is using a GAMMA curve that allows use of the KNEE, instead of using one of the CINE gammas. For instance, you could use LOW gamma with HIGH knee to create a high contrast look, or HIGH gamma with LOW knee for a lower-contrast look. Either way, you'll have some knee protection against blowouts.
