GH2 My first short with audio shot on GH2, check it out!

After having shot two silent films I've moved on from the Jean du Jardin school of film making and finally shot something with a 'proper' script. I say it like that because it was for a 48 hour film competition and we pulled the story out of our ass at the 25th hour. Our genre we picked out of a hat was sci-fi.

On the camera I used two old Nikon lenses. A 50mm 1.4 and a 24mm 2.8. One of the good things about filming in a warehouse was that it had really good lighting to begin with so I didn't have to bother setting any up. It was also darker too in some places which worked out nicely.

So it was my first short shot with the GH2. On a long spending spree a while back I somehow ended up with a juicedlink dt454. One thing I knew was that I wanted to sync the audio to the footage directly on the card. Reviews said it was alright so I'm giving it a shot. I rented the Sennheiser ME-66 only because I didn't have enough for the deposit on the 416....

The juicked link was sometimes a hassle to work with. I think it recroded the left channel slightly higher than the right channel which I had to fix in post. Near the end of the shoot and even during my initial testing the signal would cut out for whatever reason and I had to gently play with the XLR-L knob to get it back working. I'm just glad it didn't happen during the first 3/4 of the shoot. I can't really say what I think of the noise quality because we shot in a warehouse and there was a fan in the background that really made things a bit noisier. Overall it was a good cheap test run and really helped me see where I need to make some improvements in my workflow.

Check out the vid though, hope you enjoy.

All of the warehouse dialog and sound effects were out of phase. Only the music, the girl on the phone and the two scientists at the end were in phase.

Were you watching it on your phone? There's some weird audio glitch between youtube and smartphones where track 1 (the dialogue) goes goes really low volume.

Hmm, that's weird. It's been fine for me as well as other people who've watched it on youtube. I only knew of the problem when people watched it on their phones.

Does anyone have any idea why the audio in the dialogue is dropping for some people who watch it?

it played fine on my laptop, the two big guys were decent actors, the shots were good. Overall very nice job, especially for a 48hr.

Thanks! Yeah those two guys have really good chemistry together. It's too bad there's a 7 minute maximum because there was a lot more I shot between the two that had to get cut.

The dialog up front is all stereo, the women is mono. The dialog should ALL be mono. You also need some room tone to hide the audio cuts and you could remove the buzz from the dialog with some basic noise reduction.

So that's just standard procedure, always leaving dialogue in mono?

I ran de-noiser on some of the clips but still couldn't manage to get out a lot of that fan noise. I still have to do a lot more work learning about the audio side of film making though.

Just remember clean dialogue first - thats all you need to record in audio on a take. Record a minutes ambience / room tone and layer this over the entire piece and it will help level it out. Use J and L cuts on your recorded dialogue.

The balder character / actor was the top pick for me. I realise your experience level so I'll only say: There were a couple of components that lead me to believe you can improve a lot so, yes keep at it.
