My First Reel

Hello

I cut my first reel, its about %50 FS100, Red no MX, Epic, and a couple 5D Shots. I would love some feedback!

No one camera jumps out and shouts me me me. Can you breakdown the reel and pick out the camera used for each scene out of interest?

The only feedback I could reasonably give was I wish it was better compressed. Fullscreen it's been through the mincer. Shame as you've got some lovely footage there.

Hi Nirv

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I will make a better compression for my final reel, this was just a first draft!

Camera's Used

Black and White is EPIC
OPENING is RED ONE no MX
The Girl/Spy is RED ONE
all the night/fighting is FS100
Soccer is 5d, but all the other sports are RED ONE no MX

Let me know if you have any other questions

Hey nice beautiful work! Do you live in Los Angeles? I film and edit for 12 different cosmetic companies and im looking for a good DP in my area.
My reel is no where near as cinematic as yours, i do infomercials and product launches

Sasha, I don't usually comment on posts like this because I don't feel qualified. (I do newsy, head and shoulders, infomercial, type stuff.) No Narrative.
So take it with a grain of salt cause "I don't know about art but I know what I like"
First time I watched it, I was stunned. Gorgeous footy, the music was awesome and fit very well, scene cuts were spot on, content was very interesting, even the aspect ratio changes weren't jarring or distracting in any way.
I litterally had to watch a few more times to see if there was stuff I DIDN'T like. So here's some observations and you can take em for what they're worth. (my 2 cents)

The girl at :27. Love the lighting and content but there was only 2 seconds of that scene. Perhaps another couple shots dispersed throughout the clip somewhere?
(might just be the perv in me. )

Guy in Car :49 For some reason the framing seemed a little off (low?) to me. This was the ONLY thing that really stuck out that I didn't like. (and I don't know why it did. It just caught my attention immediately...?)

"Play" scene at 56: Like the girl at 27, just think another few clips would help. (Content wise it was just interesting in that it was a "change up" from the other clips)

I guess overall, this was one of the best reels I've seen in a long time. On the down side, It's obvious this is just scenes from 5 (or so) projects and I think you should try to hide that as much as possible. (try and make it look like more, different projects?) Adding a couple more clips of the girl at 27 and the "Play" scene at 56 would allow you to drop a few of the "gang" fight type scenes. (which I thought there were a few too many, even though the footy was great)

Total length was about right for me.

Like Nirv said there were a few compression issues which can be fixed easy. If the point of a reel is to show what you can do with a camera (any cam) I think you're probably gonna be working alot. Awesome!

Thanks for watching

Hello Stanley

Thanks for taking the time to watch my reel, I wish I lived in LA that is the ultimate goal. Right now I am in the Toronto Area. I am also cutting my commercial reel now which is a lot brighter and happier then my Narrative Stuff. Once again thanks for the kind words I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment, the compliment was a bonus!

Hi Chris

Thanks for your feedback, I am working on the 2nd draft and I will take some of your notes and apply them. I totally agree with you regarding the car shot is has to come out!

I love it! perv#2 chiming in for more of :27

Just fix that compression (maybe shorten the overall length?) and you'll be good as gold. Thanks for sharing.

Just wanted to watch again, noticed you changed it....Jeez, that good.

Seconded!

Better compression has really improved the FS100 night scenes. They were terribly grainy before.

By the end of the reel I'm left in no doubt that you know what you're doing with a camera. Congrats Sasha.
