C300: My First News Image Promo With The C300

This is my first full C300 spot I have shot since getting the C300. I just finished the edit today. The Canon XF codec is so easy to work with and the Log gamma gave me the flexibility to grade = a very happy DP :)

just curious, what makes your image so sharp ? I have the C100, Supposely I will get the same sharp as yours.

whats your render format ? H.264 HD 1080P 29.97 ?

Thanks guys!

I Mostly used the Canon 35mm 1.8L and Canon 24-105 F4L. The 35mm is very sharp even wide open. I also used a Figrig. The C300 is easy to handhold but I still prefere using the Figrig when I'm moving or shooting handheld. It's just easier to operate with your arms wider and to the side.
The last shot on the main set was the 35mm wide open without the Figrig. I had to slip focus from one to the other. No follow focus just did it by feel. I really could have used the new movable magnifcation feature that will be coming out in October. Center up the faces in magnification mode and rack away!

Here is another one I just finished. This is a updated version. I shot the main talent/anchors with the C300 and the reporters with the C100. Both with Canon Log gamma. The two cameras look great together. I might just have to buy a C100!

Shooting aside. It's really hard to get a performance from non-actors. These guys are journalist not actors and to be honest they hate doing these spots. I try really hard to communicate what I'm trying to achieve and they take direction really well. It's a great team to work with.

You done a great job on these Erik.
The quick cuts disguise their shortcomings as actors....but they are pros and that comes out.

You do realise that by mentioning you used both a C100 and a C300 on a video...that you are opening yourself up to a deluge of questions as to how they compare on every single feature?

Erik - why the decision to mix the 300 and 100?

- any differences in pushing around the 100 vs 300 footage?

- how did you light?

- is the non-articulating C100 LCD no longer a deal breaker? or, what's the workaround? EVFs?

Great spot- they're lucky they have you to work with!

I rented the C100 for a week when it first was available and shot all the reporters with it. The spot only aired a few times because they wanted to tweak the message a little. It ended up being several months before we got back to working on this spot. Since then the station bought a C300 and a nice Canon L lens package. :) I reshot the main anchors and we added a third as well. All the Expert reporters were shot with the C100.

Not really. With the C100 shoots I was still getting used to shooting log and I underexposed a couple shots. I should have upped the ISO and let the background blowout more. When you under expose you lose information and introduce noise. Bad combo. I got lucky that both are pretty wide shots and the face cleaned up okay. I pushed the C100 shots a lot more than C300 shots. I'm impressed with the AVCHD codec. I just hate how slow it is to edit with.

I used two Kino Flo Divas and a 350 LTM for a little back light. Key had a silk attached. Outside I used a Matthews Bounce Board

I still dont like either very much and after using the C300's viewfinder and LCD it would be hard to go back. I would use my Zacuto EVF on the C100. Just got it and it's nice. Also l would be looking at an external recorder. The Ninja is solid and the Convergent Design Odyssey7 looks amazing. Its big so handheld wouldn't work so well. I shoot handheld a lot. If I had to go back to AVCHD I would transcode to ProRes or DNxHD. I know I will get bashed for this but with premiere it's like being stuck in the mud when editing native AVCHD files. P2 and Canon XF cut like butter.

Great spot- they're lucky they have you to work with!
Thanks!
