My first Narrative Music Video (Shot entirely on the 7D)

Here is my first music video (Shot on the 7D) for the Monsters of Folk music video contest.

I chose to do a narrative style because of the weight of the song, and the need to expound on the material already provided. I felt that it was a definite heavy subject matter only a dramatic story could accompany. Along with the tempo of the song I choose to utilze the 60p mode in hopes of getting smooth slow motion in the end.

We shot this in 8 hours, all within a 10mile radius of my house.

I must say, I was quite pleased with the way it turned out, and the way the 7D performed. let me know what you guys think.

Although I'm having some SERIOUS compression problems. I have the original ProRess 444 file that looks AWESOME, but is 5gb's big. But for some reason when uploaded to Vimeo and Exposure room the colors seem to diminish. I'm working on a fix, but until now we've only got theses, so enjoy.

Outstanding. I really enjoyed this, both the music and the video itself.

The music was pleasing and i like the song, and the video was amazingly well done, you told an entire story that really got you wrapped up in it very quickly. I know you had to kind of pace things according to the song, so i cant even imagine how you planned that out before hand.

Good acting, where did you souce all your actresses from?

What did you use for lighting on the interior shots?

thanks JonE, means a lot that my colleagues enjoy my work.

I really have a thing about going BIG, whether it is in story or in concept, all of my projects have the tendency to have a lot integrated. Now that sometimes is a hard issue, due to the fact that once I get to the edit room, I have to choose when and where to let go.

Like this project, I had shot sooooo much more footage in the story, and I loved some scenes SO much more than ones that actually made it into the final cut, it made it an emotional moment.

But you have to step back, and let the piece work itself out, even if its against your own desires. Sometimes we as filmmakers can hinder the story because we have become bias to a particular actor, or scene, and if that takes place nothing good can come from it.

Concerning the actors i got the Heroin Addict from my job, of all places. When I wrote the concept for the video she literally walked into the office right as I finished the last sentence, I looked at her and was like "you are her". Now I'm not gonna say it wasn't difficult to convince her to take a role portraying a druggie, but in the end she loved the role, and we had a great time.

The actor that played the hooker I actually got from craigslist.com, I have had nothing but great results for my last 2 shorts, and most likely will continue to cast through it, if its not broke don't fix it.

And as for the Pimp, believe it or not he is one of my brothers from Church. We had one of our ministers preach, and whilst preaching had a skit or 2 acted out by various members of the congregation, and that character Leon was his. I was like OMG, thats the guy in my video, so I asked him, and he said he'd love to help.

I had a great time, and this has opened up some pretty good doors for me, as another Christian Hip-Hop artist asked me to shoot his single in a couple months, and of course I said yes.

As for lighting we had 4 mini-flos and 4 keno's available for all the motel shots. We didn't necessarily use all of them but we did use at least 2 of each. I found out that I just loved the color tempt theses lights created. really had a dingy kinda pee-yellow, LOL.
