Hey folks,

EXPLICIT LANGUAGE VIDEO

I just made a promotional video for a white rapper. The video is intended to generate a buzz for the artist and eventually get a deal, not to win me an Oscar.

With that said, I want to make the footage I have, look it's best.

I hired a gaffer and an HVX operator and did a four hour shoot.

The medium is straight to "You Tube" but I want to make one final edit with suggestions from you all.

Please take a look,

I still need too add audio of the car engine turning off.
Also, the video is soooo clean that I want to dirty it up, suggestions???

Thanks in advance, I think...

Keep at it Brian! practice practice practice. Judging by your IMDB credits you're a professional and can accept criticism. For what it is worth... Here's my take: The video has a staged feel to it. The framing is a little loose, the gaffer gave you a flat look. That said, I think you can dirty up the picture correctly with color correction and a few filters. I would tighten up the edits (maybe have someone else run through it with you, a second set of eyes always helps). Seriously though, keep at it and much success on future projects.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I will have a great edit tonight.
In hindsight, Indywannabe's comments are hilarious.

My appologies MotionFx. I seriously thought it was a parity.

Maybe that is complimentary to your good dp.

The "salty" comment has to do with the language.

Ha, no, it's a visual fx society award. I'm a looong way from any Emmy's with my video work, but I'm tryin. Those awards are for my visual fx work.

The rapper is my son, Swiss.

Brian, the kid has got some talent! I'm suprise no one had snatched him up already. Good luck with everything.

Regarding the video: Maybe you can show him with all the material things he is rapping about at the end of the video? (like the Phantom, the Mansion etc). If you want to redo the end of the video with the car and the mansion, pm me and i'll hook you up. Just need to know at least a week in advance. My uncle has got a Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Mansion we can film in Arcadia. Your son seems motivated and he is talented and I would love to help you out let me know.

Sorry guys, the file is 80 plus mb. Here is the you tube version.

Strancali, thanks for the great input and thanks for the offer. Maybe we will shoot that video with the Phantom! We have been doin this for a few years and I think with doing some vids, we can really start to get a buzz. He is already getting some interestfrom major players..

Brian that's good news. Well just let me know if need it. Oh btw, not bad for your first music video :)

The video is pretty good.

He's not bad as a rapper. I'm going to be honest with you here. If you want to get him noticed you are going to have to come with a lot more heat than that. You obviously are a good cameraman so I know you could do better.

The video is good, the studio group shots need something done to them. I'd try doing a few things, speed changes, color correction, editing, effects. I'm really not sure.

In general to get noticed in hip-hop is pretty hard. I think if you go the non gangster cliche route you will be taken much more seriously. I'm posting a link for a video a friend of mine made granted it is a very different style of hip-hop but they just piled in a van for a few days and shot on location in rural Canada. The only budget was gas money and food for a few days. (The director owned the yeti suit and the smoke machine.) It was not shot on an HVX200.

It's campy nicely shot and has a good look.

You obviously can handle a shoot as a director. I'm just suggesting for your next video to broaden your horizons. Imagine your kid rapping in alley sitting on an empty beer keg at night. Stuff like that. Sorry if I come off as an arrogant prick.:undecided

LOL. no problem.

I agree that the next video needs to be broadened with other ideas and setups. I actually do NOT want to do the typical rap video and Swiss (my son) doesnt want to be a typical rapper.

As my first video, I didnt want to get over my head financially as well as with time. I hired the camera, studio and lighting. The cost was 720 dollars for a four hour shoot. I edited and did effects in shake for a total of 25 hours (unpaid) that would be at least $1250.00 if I billed it.

There are obviously editing tricks that could help and will either get better or hire a current editing pro for the next one. More dynamic edits would make it better as well as inserts of walking down an alley or such.

Thanks for the great feedback. I have learned immensely from this site!

link does not work for me...

oh... there it fin. dwnld.

checked some of it out it though it did get kinda boring visual/story wise. i did not watch it all.

i like the clean/flat light look... but it does view like a spoof (family merc & all). (have a friend who cuts all the snl spots & she'd have some fun w/ this one).

visually fwiw:
i like what you did w/ the mixer board & him. some other visual scale relationships would be nice, like even an e.c.u of , i.e. a diamond tooth, etc. could have helped... some booty is always nice too (maybe there was some @ the end?). nice you did not go all fisheye!

wished easy-e came back from the dead to slap that biatch though, esp. when he said, "you niggas". now that would have been an ending.

really depends what kind of "character" the artist wants to be seen as... a spoof like ali-g, or marky mark. or a slimshady type.... etc... also reminded me of that old coke cinema spot the character "turtle" from entourage was discovered in... could be a good sign.
