My first major label music video

Hi Everyone,
I was just commissioned to make a small music video for a major label artist, Brandyn Burnette, who recently signed with Warner Brothers Music and Sony/ATV.
Specs:
One location, 3 days of prep, 4 hours to shoot. Canon 5D, Cineslider, Canon tilt-shift lens.
Enjoy!

3 days to prep in an studio performance? The video looks ok, but definitely could have used better lighting to give it a better effect. IMO the yellow spotlight look just doesn't really work for most projects... But hey you working with a label so I guess you are doing something rite..??

It looks fine, but the lighting does lack pop. I would have preferred to see something other than him standing there performing. You mentioned major labels, but I'm curious, who actually commissioned you?

Hi Fellas,
Thanks for commenting. I absolutely agree with both of you in terms of the lighting. I think our package consisted of a few 650W HMI's and 100w inkies. Definitely an exercise in how to make a 10x10 windowless room look interesting. I think the artist and his interpretation of the song will hold people's interest. @cassius- it was from the artist himself, as his debut album doesn't drop until next year. We just wanted to generate some further interest in his work. Thanks again!

Just some updated specs. 50,000 views in 7.15 days. 5k views in the last 5hrs. 4,425 link shares on FB. We got reports throughout the weekend that this cover version of the song played on the radio in several cities.

Just my opinion, I'm not saying its right or wrong, just a suggestion. I personally don't mind the lighting, Yes of course it could have been better but I was wondering why you don't have shots of him outside the studio.

Assuming he just wasn't into going outside for some b roll or footage then I guess I would've changed the look by having him working with the engineer appearing to be mixing his song etc..
cut aways of the mixing board, rack focus of the meters and lights on the board, Singing at different parts of the studio, maybe a couple of vibe-ing to the music shots anything to get him out of the 10x10 room. Seems like all of his footage is of him singing.

More tight and extrem tight shots, seems like a lot of medium to wide shots, The song is good and I'm sure that his fans won't care but it became very repetitive.
I applaude you because you are good at it and most importantly getting paid, gl man.:

+1

Who you know may get your foot in the door, but what you know will keep you in....

Thanks for the message ccastro. I agree with your ideas of how to make it even more dynamic, but it was a small miracle we got what we did given the time constraints. My first concern was making sure we got the the whole song covered, then it was vanity shots. The next video will feature mostly outdoor locations, so that will be something to look forward to. BTW- I checked out your "Make Yo Paper" music video. I really like those lens flares and time lapse sequences. Great work.

@vision_filmz - How right you are!

Sorry folks, was asked to take down the link here. Feel free to youtube: "Brandyn burnette how to love" and it will pop up.

Thanks JDunn. It was my 1st music video, there are some things I would've done differently but all in all for a no budget video its ok. I'm currently work on another project that I believe looks better but I can't post the video just yet.
I'm waiting for the artist and record company's approval. Unlike the one you mentioned it was shot in a club. The flares shot are a bit tricky especially with a 5D. I used a Mattebox with an ND.6 filter and a Polarizer filter along with a light meter.
You don't get a lot of takes because the sun goes down pretty quick and you have to hit it at the right time to get the flares in your lens. I don't recommend doing it without the filters and or doing it very often. I know a guy who's camera sensor was fried from doing this effect without the filters I mentioned. Do it at your own risk.

Here's a link to both "Make Yo Paper" a behind the scenes to the new video I'm working. The new one is called "Party On", You can see some of the sets and a preview of the 5D with proper lighting. The lighting was awesome, I had nothing to do with the lighting. lol...
