My first Impression of CS5 if anyone is thinking of upgrading.

So, i bit the bullet and did a software upgrade to Windows 7 and CS5. I was running on XP with CS4.

Firstly my system is a Core2 Duo 2.33Ghz 4GB Ram and a 8500 GT Graphics card.

Windows 7 runs pretty sweetly, but i have turned off some of the visual cheese just because i'm not a schoolgirl that needs to be excited by a transparent title bar.

Only really played with Premiere so far but it runs AVCHD footage pretty much the same as CS4 did, but it seems a million times more stable. I did an edit with 720 50p stuff slowed down to 25p with my playback quality set to 1/4 and it edited like dv.

In CS4 i had all sorts of problems with Time Remapping going completely out of sync and being absolutely useless, CS5 seems perfect in this department so far.

So was it worth it to upgrade software before before hardware, definitely.

For some more tech stuff that i dont really understand:

My Windows experience scores were:

Processor: 5.8
RAM 6.0
Graphics 4.1
Gaming 5.5
Hard Disk 5.9

So all in all if you thinking of going 64 bit to edit AVCHD natively then do it even when you have to turn down the res while editing.

Rad hope this is useful to somebody.

In my experience, there's no comparison at all between AVCHD performance in PP CS4 and PP CS5, even when both are in W7 64-bit. Of course, being able to take advantage of the MPE will aid considerably in that regard.

I moved to CS5 last week to. I think it's the combination of CS5 and some upgraded hardware that it making me love this new configuration.

My index is:
Processor: 7.3
RAM 7.4
Graphics 7.4
Gaming 7.4
Hard Disk 6.9

MSI 790-XT G45 Phenom II X4 3.0ghz 8gb DDR2-800, OCZ Turbo 60gb SSD system drive, and 2TB & 1TB RAID0 , Palit GTX 460 1GB , 8400GS (for reference monitor analog SD).

Still finding some things I don't like.. the keyboard shortcuts are screwy compared to what I am used to (FCP 4.0 I think in CS4 worked fine, but the FCP 7.0 in CS5 is _very_ different)... need to re-map my keys.

And I know it's more of a Windows thing, but it drives me nuts when I enter new values in AME and hit ENTER (to enter the value) but it assumes I mean "Ok, time to encode this" ... bit of a pain, not much.

You could probably go up a notch with your GPU and see a bit more scrubbing speed. A GTS 250 1GB would get you into the Mercury Playback. Anything more of a GPU would be wasted because of your CPU.

Once Adobe and others fully support the 460's architecture, CS5 will be smoking fast.

Damn, i feel like i'm taking a beater to nascar!!!
Yeah hardware is coming soon, just spent 10 weeks flat on back with knee surgery so finances are a little tight right now.
Will be rocking a i7 soon, how does the GT 240 1gig do with mercury? or should i eat potatoes and get the GTS 250?

win exp
Processor 7.2
Mem 7.2
Graphics 7.3
Gaming 7.3
HD 5.4

Here's a cut and paste post I made before...............

Just finished installing a new Nvidea card on my main edit box so I decided to emulate some of those ad vids where they apply all those effects and layers of video and color correction etc etc.

PPro cs5 and nvidea gtx285 (cuda) playback set to full resolution on the monitor.

6 layers of 1920x1080 default Canon files, pip with all kinds of effects applied didn't skip a frame. I couldn't even get it to say it needed to be rendered. added 2 more mts files on top still didn't make a difference. (I'll have to find some HDV around here somewhere and see what thats like on top.)

Still have to check the render/convert times but so far, wow! (maybe I'll be getting out of here earlier from now on.)

Neither. Well.. let me take that back.. the GTS 250 is an economical GPU for your current hardware. But you rock an i7 , spending another $200 for seamless playback isn't that much in the big picture.

Yip you probably are right, I think editing is gonna become a bigger earner for me from now on anyways with the whole gammy leg thing. but the 550d is still top of the shopping list...

I got the GT240 and it rocks on my system. I bought a cooler and I did the hack based on this advice and my performance is excellent.
