yesterday night i finished a feature, shot on 7D, 18 production days, for a 90 min feature, i had the luck of havin 7d on my hands 3 days before production started, and used it as main camera, i'm soooo happy about it, the quality is absolutely great, now i'll start a long post production, but all the footage is absolutely lovely, and sooo cinematic.

i'll publish some frame grab soon.

frame grabs please! What rigs, toys, lenses, settings and technical stuff did you guys used?

we used a shoulder mount, with follow focus and mattebox from redrock.

nd2 nd4 and nd8 4x4 filter.

lenses: 14mm f2.8 sigma - 24mm f2.0 pentax 35mm f2.0 zeiss - 50mm f 1.4 zeiss - 85mm f 1.4 zeiss 17-40 f4.0 canon 24-105 f4.0 IS canon.

lights: 1x800 janiro light a 2x10watt fluo battery light. led torches.

i mainly shot from 100 ISO to 640, for night shooting i also used 800 1250, and in 2 occasions 1600 and 2000 and i was impressed of quality at those iso level.

rigs: shoulder mount, glidetrack, 6meter rails, tripod, and lots of fantasy, i found myself shooting in ways i never thought it was humanly possible, miracles of this little jewel.

now i damnly want a 1Dmk4 and shoot at iso6400 and lookin the world from there.

Congrats on the first feature!

The frame grabs look really good. Those were taken from the video correct?

Did you use any picture styles or the flatten image sets on the 7d?

You may not want to reveal this, but what budget were you working with? Ultra low?

What editing workflow are you going with?

Best,
Andy

hi andy,

> The frame grabs look really good. Those were taken from the video correct?
yes, grab from mov files

> Did you use any picture styles or the flatten image sets on the 7d?

flatten, just worked on WB, i'll do post production color correction for styles

> You may not want to reveal this, but what budget were you working with? Ultra low?

all the feature will be around 10k euros, including everything, me i worked for free on this.

> What editing workflow are you going with?

i'll convert files with uncompressed prores, FCP for syncing audio-video and editing. color and magic bullet looks for CC, after efffect for special FX. audio editing will be done separetely on Logic

sorry, but it looks completely like video... as it's been said millions of times, light is what
makes difference between video and cinema, not depth of field...

wow. it seems like there is always some negativity in every post on here nowadays.

I thought the grabs looked good. congrats on finishing the feature!

no offence, please, didn't mean to sound negative. it's just everyone is obsessed these
days with DOF.. i will definintely come here to see what you come up with in post,
post shots once you have grading.

cheers!

He stated an opinion - what's wrong with that? He didn't do it in a very harsh way and did say he would come back and take a look and then re-judge.

Relax people.

I thought some of the screengrabs were cinematic and others, well they do look a little video-y. I will however wait for post-production to finish and see what the wonders of CC'ing, score, etc can do.

you didn't sound negative, i just replied you that i agree that still look like video, but after CC will look more cinematic, when the gamma will be moved, i already did lots of trying during shooting and saw that I can achieve the result i want.

Thanks everyone i will post a couple of raw footage in few hours, I have to say that i learned so much in this forum, and all this experience sharing can improve so much our work.

Indeed, but a shot with unappealing lighting won't look better shot on film. In any case, now we're critiquing what is in front of the lens rather than behind it; it's a welcome change from having something that may look nice to our eyes but gets eaten by a poor sensor.

I'm putting off any evaluations since there's grading to be done, other than to say congratulations on taking on and completing such a big challenge - it's inspiring for the rest of us, and I'm sure this feature will be the first of many!
