My first DVX project

So here are two shorts I did about two months apart in school about a year and a half ago. Let me know what you think! Even if it's "negative" criticism let me know what doesn't work. And if something does work, well let me know too.

Thanks for the input. And finally the Vimeo videos work much better than YouTube did. Viva la Vimeo!

Good pacing. Some nice shots in there, but the handheld at the start was a little shaky. Always use a tripod unless hand-held is absolutely warranted.

The exposure was good, but the lighting was very flat, dull, uninteresting. Were you shooting ambient light only, or did you have a kit at your disposal?

And the audio was very roomy. It was too consistent to have been on-camera mic, but it sounded like either poor placement, poor mic choice, or both.

Thanks for the feedback. Well one, it was supposed to be a hospice room. And often they are lit with just overhead flou lights, and well that's what happened to be in that room. So I decided to keep it the way the environment would actually look. In terms of the sound, it doesn't sound like that on the actual footage, the compression from sticking in youtube or converting, I don't know, the sound is kinda jacked. Since that room was fairly empty and had nothing to absorb sound, I put blankets everywhere I could stick them kick down the echo and hollowness of the sound. Seeing as I had an hour to shoot that and that included EVERYTHING but rehearsing the actors and setting up the room. So all in all I'm kinda happy with it, but I see things that I wish I could change.

A friend of mine edited it, and I like what he did with it, and yes I now hate that opening shot. I would like to remove it, but I keep it in there as lesson learned.

i liked it....yeh the lighting was dull but as u said...thats usually the case in those places. but ahm...it just cut at 3.07? wheres the rest...or am i missing sumthing

For some odd reason uploading that to YouTube, the ending is cut off. I need to go upload it again...thank you for pointing that out.

cool...will be looking out for the reuploaded one. btw very nice quality...especially on retarded youtube.

I understand your point, but I'm not a huge fan of "leaving it the way it would look in real life." It's flat. No shadows. No depth. No interest. The best lighting is the lighting that you don't notice, but still manages to act just as much as the cast.

Case in point: watch a few episodes of Scrubs, but make sure that they're NBC seasons (the move to ABC brought about some lighting changes). They manage to make everything appear sterile, like a hospital, but still have depth to the lighting. It feels right to the viewer, but it isn't completely flat.

As a side-note, though the writing has been incredible this season, I'm not so keen on the new lighting design... much more contrast, deeper shadows, and exposed for more saturated colors... too dramatic for what Scrubs has been.

Even on the new Vimeo upload, it still sounds too roomy. Compression doesn't add reverb and reflections like that. And blankets can only really do so much.

What was your audio setup (mic/s and placement)?
