My first AF100 Project

This is the first project I've shot on my new AF100. It's okay, though there are a few things I would do differently. It actually was pretty difficult because my camera has a 6 frame delay from the live action in front of the camera to the EVF, onboard LCD and external monitor. The director couldn't tell if I was on beat or not...

This is also my first attempt at the "poor man's process"

Anyway, here is the video, I would really appreciate any feedback you'd be willing to throw at me.

Technically, very good!
Story line.... Should have had them all die in a horrible drunken car crash because because thats what you're promoting.

oops I meant to post this in the Screening room...

I agree on the story, I didn't write it, I just DP'd the project. So feed back on the cinematographer would be great. You're right about the story though...

LOL! +1

I thought the opening stuff looked great with the valet and all. Got a little hokey once the "video" started if you ask me. Wasn't crazy about the white background parts of the interior driving bits. Some of the more candid location stuff looked pretty good. I think a lot of the problem was you weren't working with real actors, plus the two guys have a pretty awkward presence, they don't particularly exude that "star quality" you look for in an artist, they come off pretty amateurish. That said, bad acting will kill your video very easily no matter how much work YOU put into it. I dread anytime I need to use someone's "friends" for stuff. And yeah...a bit overkill on the alcohol, especially since everyone in the video looks underage. My general rule about using alcohol is it's ok to show it, tastefully, but while doing so, minimize any shots of people actually drinking it. Holding a drink and drinking a drink gives the same effect, but one visually is more pleasing and less offensive.

Oh and I think it's missing a shot at the end of the guy still waiting for his car. "insert bit here"

I agree with dusty 100%

Really neat song, audio mix , edit and film visuals etc but ...message is so irresponsible.

Filmakers need to take some responsibility because of the power of the communication media.

Thumbs down from me!

I'm at work right now, so i can't view it yet. But i'm really surprised that so many people seem to be getting lag between their AF100 & external monitors. I'm using one of the Lilliput 7" HDMI screens & i've got none of that at all. I used to get it a bit when running firewire off my HVX to my laptop, but i've not seen any of that on the AF100 - although maybe it's worth noting that i've actually got the AF101, which is the european version - although as far as I know, there's actually no difference between that and the original AF100.

Did you say you even get it with the onboard LCD?

I've noticed a 2 frame lag since the DVX days. There was a problem with the first DVX-100 because it recorded audio with no lag so then the audio needed to be adjusted 2 frames in post to be in sync. This was for the 24p modes. They fixed this in later iteration and lagged the audio accordingly. This carried over to the HVX line as well...both audio and video lag. I know this for a fact because I've often recorded two cam shoots where I'd record the audio out of one cam and into the input of the other as a backup, this resulted in a two frame difference in sync between the two. I notice a lag on all displays on the AF-100 as well. Maybe my eyes are more in tune with slight differences. I can easily tell when something is even a frame out of sync, or the difference between 24p and 25p, and I see the "rainbow effect" like whoa in all DLP display systems. The EVF on the AF-100 is completely unusable for me, colorful blurry mess. I even see it on the praised BOMB EVF from RED.

The story appears to be incomplete. Allow me to fill the void. At least in the U.S., driving on a street like this would certainly attract attention and, most likely, unless they are extremely lucky, a run in with law enforcement. These punks would be so busted (spread on asphalt, searched, handcuffed, booked) and spend the rest of the night in the county jail. The next morning they will wake up in a cold cell on concrete floor covered in their own vomit and urine. They will be photographed in that condition, drawn blood from a vein, and arraigned on charges of multiple counts of misdemeanor and felony for intoxication in public, driving under influence, minor in possession, providing alcohol to a minor, grand theft auto, and other theft of tangible property. Relatives will be utterly upset and disgraced, most former friends will abandon. When convicted, the chicks (some appear underage) will likely get probation, frequent substance tests, community service, and pay fines. The hoopla boys (seem in early 20s) will likely pay hefty fines and get time in the pen, where they are likely to become bitches. Upon the completion of their sentence, they will have to work s**tty and underpaid jobs nobody else wants. Forget about valet parking. I am talking toilet cleaning at a gas station. That is if they don't die in a crash first or kill someone else (add a vehicular manslaughter). If the above scenario gets incorporated in the music video, then it could make a useful and sick production. Otherwise it is incomplete storytelling.

Well done technically. Decent staging, camerawork, and post. I noted many repetitions, same (or very similar) footage looped. Seems like stuck on replay at times. The abrupt end does not go well with the opening. It seems that the editor just got tired and quit. I imagine that the story was written by a teenager, and then the production crew had to make the best of the Mikey Mouse. Hope this helps.

Hahaha well said real world scenario.

Your technical notes are helpful. Thank you. More are welcome.

As for the delay, yes even the LCD is delayed. I could handle 2 frames, though 2 frames is still very noticeable. But when it gets to the point that camera work looks off beat, it gets disorienting and upsets the director. I sent it in to see if panasonic will fix it. I'll let you know how it goes.
