My first 7d project

I shot this for a film class. Had trouble nailing exposure, and finding focus. Came up with a little bit of jelly ;(

I'm interested in any feedback - positive or negative.

haha....that was awesome!!
You're dead on about not nailing your exposure, and you were soft at times, but the the story was executed perfectly IMO...nice edits - good flow - without a word of dialogue. Nice job.

Nice, job but yeah you def had some problems. All the shots in the car driving were almost unusable, way to bouncy, you need some type of stabilizer or steadycam for those, (or just drive, really, really slowly)

Your exposure was a bit off, and you probably shot during to bright of a time during the day, (good to learn all this stuff early on). Your focus was off at times but overall not to horrible.

I did like your use of medium, close and wide (establishment) shots, always show your audience where they are, with the wide, whats going on with the mids, and close ups for details and emotions. TO many times beginners forget this (including me at times), but thats one thing you got right IMO.

My fav shot was the camera on the ground, looking at the guy lying on the ground as the car sits there and then drives off.

Nice simple concept, and decent execution. IM guessing you could really edit 30 secs to a min off of this to help it flow a long better also.

What lens and CF card were you using?

As for a stabilizer, i built one of these for like $10 in materials from home depot, and it makes a world of difference

i modified the design by adding a quick release that i got from amazon, i use the same quick release on my steadycam, and i need to get another for my tripod so its all interchangable.

I want to get a 7d hopefully have one soon (currently shooting a D90)

Nice to see other DVX users in texas.

Well done. IMO It's weird he was too impatient, obviously there's a connection he was totally in before he became forceful-which given what we've seen of him so far felt borderline ridiculous and is only logical if you think every normal person on the road suddenly becomes a rapist when they pick up a hitchhiker, which seems to be the logic of this movie's universe. I feel like this could have been more interesting had it not turned into an obvious rape-fest because it started off well enough and the whole time up until "it" happened I had fingers crossed saying "don't cop out movie. don't cop out. don't.... damnit!"

There's something weird going on with the images. I keep seeing a double images:
If you press pause, you often see two frames averaged together.
This sometimes see this with de-interlaced footage - or if the frame-rate has been reduced in post.
Did you shoot at 30fps?

C.

Thanks everyone for your comments, they are appreciated. I shot the film on the kit lens for the 7d (I can't afford anything else at the moment) with the sandisk 16gb memory card. It was essentially a one day shoot with one day for pickups.

Battery went out about midday, which was perfect because I just charged it at a subway during lunch. As I said, this is my first 7d project, and there were a lot of things I had to get used to. I am coming from the xl2 - which is quite a change.

I think the reasons I missed exposure and focus at points was due to the lcd screen, and my inability to see it clearly. I don't wear glasses, but I do think my vision is getting worse which probably doesn't help. Anyone have any recommendations for a solution for the view screen?

Jon, I will check out the stabilizer, thanks! Always good to meet another Texan.

Carniphage - you are not wrong about the frame rate issue. My partner edited the film on the school's computer, which had final cut pro, and I have premiere. Due to a codec mess, I ended up sending the clip through two or three encoding processes, in which at least one of them I know I selected 25fps. Just a dumb brain fart on my behalf.

This is my first post here, and I really do appreciate the feedback.

I liked it.

About exposure, make sure you have something to be able to see the LCD without glare. Then expose lower even if your mids look a bit low, then raise them in post.
