My first 2 real work D800 shoots

I run a small production company in London & bought a D800 3 months ago, only just starting to use it on paid jobs thought I would share my results.

Currently just been using with a 24 - 70 Nikon 2.8 lens & a Zacuto viewfinder. Filmed straight to SD card, edited in FCP graded in Adobe Speed Grade.

Normally I either use a AF100 or hire in a C300. am really happy with the results & workflow of the D800 and now want to use it more than my AF100 where it is practical. I will be looking at options for an external monitor tho as for more important shoots the back screen just doesn't cut it. I would also say having used an external recorder on one job I don't think it is worth the hassle as the on board recording is very good. Audio wise it can be a pain & would only use plugging in a mic into the camera for quick turnaround web projects.

Thanks

Looks great. I agree with the external recorder vs on board recording. On board is very good. I've been using a Marshal Electronics 7 inch monitor and have been happy with that so far.

Slightly OT, but... after years of Canon, I've had several low-pay projects that needed a third camera, and just got a loupe for my D7000. It's consistently "better" than the canon to my eye - color rendering, contrast, and color temp all seem to come together for an image I'm far more happy with. The blacks intercut with my Panasonic pro cameras really nicely. Really eyeing the D800 these days.

I will probably get a ninja recorder for my D800 for use in an upcoming large project with numerous files. That way I will have clip naming and TIME CODE for the files. You also get zebras and some other features with it. That's only reason I'd see using an external recorder, cause I agree the internal is pretty decent.

being the owner of a Ninja 2...I dont think those reason are good enough.

clip naming...you really have to be diligent and when you get in a time crunch thats the first thing you throw out the window.

time code...the Nikon doesnt generate TC...and there is no way (that I know of) to sync TC between the Nikon and Audio device.

zebras/false color/etc...The histogram and lcd on the camera are way more accurate than the screen on the Ninja.

That said...the biggest advantages of the Ninja (or other recorders) is the fact you can record straight to prores or avid files, thus skipping the dreaded transcoding process. Getting an additional monitor is nice as well.

If you use Adobe Premiere for editing you don't need to transcode at all. It works nice and fast with clips out of the camera.
I have been impressed myself with this and thinking seriously to drop Final Cut Pro and move on to Premiere for this...

For me timecode would be pretty important. So the NINJA does create timecode on the clips it records right? So if I inputted my audio into the inputs on the D800 it would pass through the hdmi onto the NINJA right? Now, there IS one concern I have. The HDMI output on the camera outputs the signal with a 3:2 pulldown right? Not something I want when recording 24fps.

I worded it badly...as far as I know...you can not jam TC to the Ninja. Not when connected the Nikon anyway. You can only use the TC generated by the Ninja itself.

If I am incorrect on this matter someone please feel free to let me know.
