My dilemma with HVX

Hey guys,

Ok so the company I work for are gearing up to do their first HD project with a client here in Seattle. The end output will be a regional commercial spot and a video of it on their website. Anyways, I have been asked to research what is needed for this project. I have done a few stuff in HD.....my workflow has mostly been HVX w/ P2 cards and then dumped via FCP on a powerbook. And then edited in FCP with a sequence corresponding to whatever settings i shot in. Pretty standard stuff right. Which actually I personally think this is the ideal and cost effective way of doing it.

Yet my boss wants to know of any other methods can be used to do this and this is where the research comes in. He wanted me to research and then educate him and my coworkers on whether or not we need a KONA card and whether or not it can upconvert SD to HD stuff in the field. I'm not sure what KONA cards are or what they actually do. I've read a little bit about it, but still unclear on what it does or actually if we need it in this scenario for this project. All I know that it offers another input for your computer other than firewire and that it is pretty expensive (upwards to $3,000).

So for this project and maybe any other project we do down the road in HD and HD for broadcast. What is the best workflow, equipment (ie p2 cards, firestore, etc) and post workflow for broadcast that you guys reccomend.

Also another few questions which is probablyl a stupid question, but my boss is not totally convinced because he's still in the SD world mindset and totally new to HD, is there a way to shoot in HD in tape form? And can the HVX record both in P2 mode and output to miniDV at the same time?

Any thoughts? I need as much input as possible. Thanks guys!

Here's what I know - a KONA card (or other I/O hardware) provides you with analog inputs AND outputs. If you are using tapeless acquisition, you don't need this, but you may need it for output to any number of different decks.

What is your workflow now for delivery? If you are handing off a digital video file to a post-house for output to tape, you do not need any other equipment.

You can shoot HD on tape with some cameras (VariCam, CineAlta, others), but not the HVX. HVX records only SD on tape.

I'm sure someone else will weigh in with more answers in a moment...

Just an addition to herbalmedia's post- the Kona 3 card also has HD and SD SDI in and outs in addition to the standard analog ins and outs.
