My Canon T3i reads "Card cannot be accessed"

In the middle of shooting, it just stopped working and said that. I tried sticking the card into my computer to see what the problem was and to see the footage I had already shot, but the computer says it will have to erase the card in order to access it. It's a 10 class 16 GB card. What do I do?

Thanks.

it seems it got corrupted somehow
for the shoot, just switch to a different card, there's nothing else you can do on the spot
and now, for getting back the footage that you already had in that card, you'll need some file recovery software; I don't have recent experience with this kind of thing (luckily!); I know there are lots of them, and I know that it's not easy to find a free one (many seem to be free, but once you're using them they will hold your data until you pay the ransom, I mean price)

Okay thanks. Any idea how it would have gotten corrupted, so I could avoid this again in the future possibly? I mean all of a sudden it just popped up. Why is it that the camera is capable of randomly corrupting it's own footage?

Many possible causes, I'm afraid
* abused card: format your cards instead of deleting their contents, at least from time to time; a freshly formatted card is not the same as one that's been used for months writing and deleting stuff
* bad card, prone to getting corrupted (if it happens again on this same card, put it away, at least until it happens on a different one)
* bad battery, short loss os power (difficult to track, and not really all that likely)
* bad camera
* random error: stuff happens!
