GH5 My camera crashed and now no files can be read from the SD card

In addition to card speeds (V60, V90) you may want to check if diffraction compensation is turned on. I had a similar problem with a G9 (camera crashed - Lexar and Sony cards, pre V60) with marginal cards when this feature was enabled. Once off when shooting video, I have not since had the problem. May only be coincidence, but worth a try if it is on. I have since turned it off on my GH5 and 5S for video just to be safe. Faster cards definitely work better - V60 and up.

It happened to my GH5 again today: I shot a scene for a review I'm working on, and the camera didn't turn off despite flipping the switch to off. The screen on the back of the camera had a still image from the scene I had just shot and it just stayed on. When I had this situation previously, I popped the battery out... and that's when I lost files from the SD card. This time, defying logic, I pulled out the SD card while the camera was still in its "locked on" mode. Much to my surprise, all the files were there and everything played fine. With the SD card out of the camera, I popped the battery out to force the camera off. The same thing happened a second time today, and I did the same thing: I pulled out the SD card, then popped the battery. All the files were there on the SD card... nothing lost.

I don't know if I have a special situation with my camera. However, if your GH5 locks up and you're thinking of pulling the battery to shut it down, pull the SD card out instead. That worked better for me.
 
Just make sure you have stopped recording. Then taking the card out is fine I think. Not sure how the battery influences things but certainly will corrupt the files if recording hasn't stopped. I do the same now when using the battery grip having messed up once will not do that again.
 
I just wanted to post an update about my crashing problems with the GH5. I had multiple crashes when I had two V60 SD cards in the two slots: 256GB in slot A and 128GB in slot B. Once I started having crashes, I experimented with both SD cards and ended up with the 256GB card in slot A, with slot B empty. Since I have been running the GH5 in that configuration (6 months now), I've had only one instance where the GH5 would not turn off. Instead of pulling out the battery, I popped the SD card out and all the files were on it -- nothing was lost.

So... if you have occasional crashes where the GH5 will not turn off and is seemingly locked up, just pull out the SD card and check the files. With the card out, you can remove the battery and shut the camera down. **Don't remove the battery with the SD card still in the camera.** My experience is that will scramble files and you will lose them. My suggestion is also to use a big SD card in the A slot and leave the B slot empty, unless you have a really good reason to do otherwise. Using cards in slots A & B seemed to make my camera crash more often.

Of course, my crashing problems could have been related to the SD cards I used or something else entirely... there's no easy way to diagnose that.
 
Certainly when I got the GH5 the maximum card size was 128G and I have not tried with a 256G card. Did that limit change with an update?

Yes.
I couldn't figure out the problem...and, like you, tried everything.
What fixed it:
I didn't remove the battery, but I did remove the card.
Then I put the camera away.
I looked in on it a couple of days later and all was fine; everything was working as it should.
Don't have any answers beyond that.
I even sent it to Panasonic...but they were no help.
