My 6th short is here for you.

Dear DVXusers!
I made this a few months ago but had been lazy about putting this up on here to get some feedback. It was my first time really setting up what I wanted to shoot, but it was a very spur of the moment kind of thing that was not really planned in any real fashion. I look forward to doing more similar shorts. There is some CC on this, I believe it was color reversal and some Bleach Bypass. I used some 25 dollar a piece lights from a local photostore with the shots, and I was quite impressed with how it came out. I hope you guys like it!

Give us a full rundown on your settings, cc method, editing system, etc.

A lot more detail should go into the intial posts when people post grabs. This way we don't have to ask questions and wait for answers.

It looks pretty good, actually. No 35mm adapter or anything?

Sorry for not posting more in the first place, but...
I edited it in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, and then did the CC with Magic Bullet Editor's, and used No 85 (Not color reversal as I previously stated, sorry) and Bleach Bypass at the end and on the shots of the phone. I did not use any 35mm adapter or anything. Besides that I filmed it in 24Pa with Cinegamma at CineLike V, more contrasty and film like in my opinion. Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

I love the way it looked. I'm a fan of that semi-staccato visuals that your entire short has. I have to admit, I don't have the shound up, but the image quality was just fine for me.

Good job.

Good question there. You said 25 a piece from a photo store. What were the names and ratings?

I'm not entirely sure about the lighting, A friend of mine bought them from a camera shop outside of Boston (Newton, MA to be exact) called Newtonville camera. They're pretty standard just clampable lights with those metal half spheres around the side of them. They did definately work pretty well though! I would recomend them to anyone.

I very much loved the feel of this short. The lighting helped to keep me intriqued and watching. You did a really nice job here of visuals and choice of music, but I don't understand the story.....then again....some works can just be appreciated for the visuals alone.

good job.

i dont really understand what happend in the end.. and the phone stoped ringing for awhile while he was going up the stairs, but then started ringing like crazy.

Very nice formally and visually. Conceptually, I need more. Seems to dance somewhere between non-narrative mood piece and wanting to tell a story. Looks great, though.

I've always found that this combo, along with a slightly lower master ped to get rid of some extra noise in the blacks, gives the image a much richer look to it like a slide of film. What I usually do now is keep master ped down a little bit lower than usual (maybe -5 and then -7 or -8 in well lit areas) to help give the picture less of a "standard video" look and more potency. then I change stuff to however I want in post. I know a lot of people like to shoot barebones type images to leave more options in post, but I like to shoot mine as closely to my vision as possible (but not OVERdoing the contrast) and the tinkering in post.

oh, and I really liked this short. shots looked great.

Reverend

I like your style. You have an eye for composition and your coloring and grading are tops in my book. I'd like to see you move next to a narrative structure. Although I find you montage executions appealing I find them lacking that one thing; a story.

The beginning was great - it really felt like it was building to something all the way through. The very end though takes us completely out of what we're watching though. Suddenly we hear the operator telling us to try our call again as if we were calling - instantly the mood vanishes - was this the intent?
Great lighting though! It really creates the mood.

John,
I've been writing REAL short with narrative and such for months, but I'm a junior in highschool and have such a small amount of time to get these things going. But alas, rest assured, it will be here soon. Also, a lot of the shots I need I won't be able to achieve until summer. But, I'll do my best to come up with something to show that I can work with narrative...although, I'll doubt it will be very linear. Sorry, but I like really wierd things.
And Roaming Bobert,
I'm glad you enjoyed it...to me the shock was necesarry. I like dramatic shifts from one mood to another. You start to get comfortable with one thing (even if it's an uncomfortable feeling) and then it shakes the mood. Whether it fits your liking or not, I liked it. As for the significance, I don't know if it's really there, or if it would be appropriate to explain it.
Not to sound pretentious, or anything of that nature, but it should just take shape to you as it should. The feel was the main aspect of it.

Looks good. I agree w/ John-I'd love to see what you can do w/ a real script etc. I look forward to your next.
