I used the MXFX for mac on a recent job for Apple. We covered the opening of their new store in Sydney Australia. First Apple owned store in OZ and the biggest one in the southern hemisphere, pretty cool job, head of Apple marketing was there even Apple's Ron Johnson was there.

The event was covered with an A-minima, an SR2 supper16 and 2 X HVX. They wanted all the HD footage converted to NTSC (as Australia is PAL). We shot 72025PN and I used MXFX to encode it all to 23.98. The process was quick and easy, it maintained the source footage in MXF format and according to MVB is a lossless process so no pointless QT compression.

From using it I can say that it is an application I would mostly use for mass conversions. Converting an entire backup of a project is a bit of a fiddly task though and may prove to be a lot better if MXFX would be able to recognize directory structure and maintain these upon export. This would streamline the work flow and batch exports to a much faster and smother pace. For instance, if I use P2CMS to back up I would probably store them as follows: Project name/ day number/ card number/shot I.D/CONTENT . All shots will be in their shot number I.D folder with in the appropriate card number. Or disk images; Project name/ day number/ card number/*.dmg . If it were possible to drag in the entire project folder for it to be re created with the newly converted files and their original directory structure. This would be a huge bonus and I am sure would make the app a lot more attractive.

BUT it wasn't entirely painless, while a very good application it still has a few little bugs to be resolved. If the computer went to sleep or even if the computer didn't go to sleep but the screen saver would come on, it would crash. Also I found that when fed more than approximately 40 clips at a time it would crash. No biggie though I must say crashing just means re-launch then if the first attempt was for say... 60 clips click and drag in 30 at a time. I also took my computer off all power saving modes which was no big deal for the duration of the hour or so it took to convert the whole project.

All up a very good application that can easily be made a great application, AWESOME work DVfilms.
