MXF in a quicktime wrapper how do we get it out and into FCP?

A client just sent us his selects from his P2 card and they are mxf file wrapped in QT and have .mov extensions. We cannot get them into FCPS2!

I downloaded Raylight for Mac but it apparently only sees real .mxf files on a P2 card.

I could move the .mov's into its processing window but when I looked at the output folder there was only a document file there with the names of the drives it had looked at--no links!

How can we convert these "wrapped" mxf files to something FCP can use?

FCPS2 on G5 8-core, 6 gigs ram, OSX 10.49

did you also get the CONTENTS folders for the shots?

If so then, in FCP, go to import.

import p-2....then select the whole CONTENTS folder, not what is inside it.

this is off the tiop of my head so good luck.

Can you play the files in QuickTime? What format does the QuickTime player say the video is in? Maybe the client gave you a file using an oddball codec.

mxf and qt are both wrappers each wrapper can hold content in a variety of codecs
the hvx shoots dvcprohd (codec) in an mxf wrapper.
if they are QT files then hey were probably ingested into final cut pro and were exported as a QT wrapper in whatever codec your client chose to export. It may be dvcprohd in a QT wrapper it may be something else they have that you don't have.

I believe that, from posts on another website, this particular user had Avid DVCPROHD quicktimes and of course could not read them in FCP without the Avid codec. Not sure that would have helped since the free Avid decoder is extremely slow.

The best solution in this case, if you are stuck with the files and can't get them in a better format, is a utility that will change the codec flags from avhd (Avid) to dvcp (Apple), etc. We have a utility like that for AVI's called Rackslam which converts DVRack AVIs to Raylight AVI's.

If anyone has a burning need for something like that for Quicktime, we have such a tool here for internal use so contact DVFilm.
