Ive been having a lot of trouble trying to get my MXF files that were taken from my HVX200 to play on Final Cut Pro. Does anyone suggest a program that doesnt cost an arm and a leg?? I tried buying Aunsoft, but having troubles finalizing it. Im lost, please help :)

You import them into FCP using Log and Transfer. FCP won't play the files as MXFs; they have to be rewrapped as Quicktime.

Final Cut Pro will log and transfer HVX200/DVCProHD footage without any issues.

There is no need to purchase anything else.

I realize that final cut studio is compatible with p2 directly, but since i was travelling and only had a netbook with me, i transferred everything onto a hard drive via usb...This put the files into MXF format, and now final cut isnt recognizing it....If only i had my mac and a firewire with me, it would be no problem. I think David Jimerson is on the right track...i just need that program that will play MXF files on Final Cut Studio. Thanks for any help

what exactly was your transfer process?

for final cut to see it properly. everything has to be in the EXACT same file/folder structure as it was on the P2 card:

CARD_NAME
-- CONTENTS
---- AUDIO
---- CLIP
---- ICON
---- PROXY
---- VIDEO
---- VOICE
-- LASTCLIP.TXT

if you just copied over the VIDEO folder or something like that. your'e probably screwed.

the simplest and most trouble free transfer process on a mac:

1. create a new folder on your computer / external hard drive / wherever. call it "P2_CARDS" (all caps. no punctuation or special characters. use underscores instead of spaces)
2. in that new folder, create ANOTHER folder. call it "MM_DD_YY_CARDxx". for today, your first folder would be "05_24_11_CARD01" create another SEQUENTIALLY numbered forlder for EVERY card you transfer. the second folder for today would be "05_24_11_CARD02" and so on...
3. insert/ connect /mount your P2 card
4. double-click the P2 card icon to open it
-- 4b. be sure that the folders youve just created are visible on the screen under or adjacent to the newly opened p2 card window
5. select all (command a) to select both the CONTENTS folder and LASTCLIP.TXT file on the P2 card
6. drag both of those to your newly created numbered folder.
7. wait.

there are applications you can use to transfer cards (shotput pro, p2cms, etc) and some people swear by them.
but ive done it this way for over 3 years without a single problem or lost file (call me neurotic. but i like to have control over the process)

If you have ONLY the MXF files and not the complete folder structure, you can install P2CMS from Panasonic (free download) and drag the MXF files directly to the timeline. But if you don't have the audio MXF files, then you don't have audio at all.
