[musicvideo] The Gathering - Heroes For Ghosts

Hello everybody,

I posted this already in one of the DSLR threads, but I would love to get some discussion going about the artistic side of this piece.

This is a musicvideo I shot in Norway for Dutch rockers The Gathering's song Heroes For Ghosts. They approached me, aside from the fact that we're friends, because of the mood of some of my previous films. They wanted this video to be a bit more experimental and cinematic. It's a very long piece, nearly 11 minutes. The first track of their upcoming new album. It was put online on the band's Youtube Channel in mid-June and has accumulated more than 33,000 views to date with many favorable comments and reviews.

Because of the fact that their leadsinger is Norwegian, I lobbied them to shoot the video in Norway, so I would have access to the very beautiful and majestic landscape. A feature that The Netherlands is surely lacking. Originally we tried to cast actors for the parts, but eventually we decided that for various reasons it would be best that the leadsinger herself (and her boyfriend) would star.

I wrote, directed, shot and edited the video. It was shot on a DSLR, a piece of equipment I had next to no experience with, being a *wait for it* DVX-user up to now.

It was a wonderful experience, very exciting and challenging, which has cemented my desire to try and make filmmaking a serious part of my life. I would love to do another project soon, be it a musicvideo, a short or whatever! =)

Ok, here goes...

Way to long to start, :50 seconds of Street light Bokeh is way to much on top of that you ended it like that as well. I would say an intro should be NO MORE than :30 and if it is longer you should be showing different things. Anybody who is anybody does not have all day to watch everyones project so you have to get to the point.

Honestly the project doesn't look bad, but way to many slow edits and lack of visuals is what killed it for me.

Well, the band wrote the song... you had to fill in the space with something. This was a major challenge from the get go. Maybe you could've fleshed out the story a bit more to keep it engaging. Maybe suggest a "radio friendly" splice of the song? It is artistic and looks very nice though! You and the band should decide if you want to keep the torturous length intact.

I like the vid but yeah, that intro is tough to power thru.

I've had a couple video's where the song had extended intros - I always explain to the band that it's a huge disincentive for people to watch it, also for any TV outlet to ever play it. So fat the bands have understood and shortened the intro to more acceptable lengths.
