Thanks a bunch, Derrick!

The "Keys" recorded the music at Muscle Shoals Sound here in Alabama

Thanks, Morgan (or S ?)! Don't almost... buy the music! It's a fantastic album... I'll add a link in the screening room, thanks for the suggestion... I wasn't sure if you're allowed to do both...

The kids were a lot of fun to work with. Had only a couple of moments where I had to deal with some "kid" issues... for the most part they were hard workers and very cooperative. So working with kids wasn't that difficult of a situation, but I did used to be a substitute teach and enjoy/know how to work with kids, so maybe that had something to do with it... but I don't want to overshadow the fact that my main kids were phenomenal talent... really awesome professional kids.

The crew was around the 30 mark, I believe.

Its interesting that you've got almost a home video look, yet its a pretty serious production

It looks so simple yet much work

I wonder in these situations why not shoot red - as a % of the daily cost surely it would be minimal

Im glad its 30 people - Id feel incompetent if a couple of folks could just do it in an afternoon with their friends children - which is kinda what it looks like

but things that read to the viewer as simple are often reliant on highly skilled execution

well i have to disagree with you on the home video look... i'd say it has more of an organic than polished look... and that was the intent...

but it wasn't a 30 person crew... i just kinda threw that number out there off the top of my head, but when i break it down i think it was more like 15 including PAs and make up...

but dealing with kids is no easy task and a lot of people involved were concerned if i could even pull it off in a day's shoot, which is why we went with 7D to just move faster throughout the day... not lose time from powering up and down and the time involved with lens changes n such in anticipation for a difficult day working with kids...

and thank God we did because we had a poo pooing furry of problems that day including a freaking rain storm that came through and shut down our production halfway through... it was craziness, but we fought through it and were able to finish it... good times...

i'm a fan of simplicity, though my next video that i have coming out for Chrissie Hynde was a pretty complex shoot and shot on the RED, but yeah... the Next Girl video, for example, was a crew of 3...

Nicely art directed.

Must... ask... obligatory... question... about lenses.

More than the kit lens from Mastodon, apparently? A very nice soft look, lens wise. I was thinking organic but you already said that. But I thought of it independently.

but it wasn't .

Dont take me the wrong way

but say the opening shot and the bench shot (fivth in) for starters have small amounts of shake

shake that obviously you have the competence and budget to avoid

I therefore assume it is there with intent

The second shot dolly along the fence the horizon is off

In my eye such makes the viewer aware of the camera operator as kind of part of the cast

as opposed to the way that big smooth dollies and steadicams have an impassionate unseen eye spying on a scene

ergo we know there is some there making a film

Thats what I meant by home video - maybe a poor choice of phrase - the camera and operator as sort of part of the cast

Not a bad look - I like it - but a look for sure

edit
As for Next Girl that even has the grade and flicker of a home movie camera (8mm from the 70s kinda look) the the composition, cutting, content, and client bely that simplicity, incedentaly the grade, flare and backlighting have are more of the insignia that I would call organic

Both are way cool - dont get me wrong on that one

A one day shoot with 8 kids and you're nitpicking horizon and a tiny camera shake? I didn't even notice the shake until you pointed it out.

I disagree with your critical assertion that small filming mistakes break the fourth wall. Plus, suspension of disbelief is not required in a music video; the audience doesn't need to be engaged at that level.

A nice little idea, good performances and art direction - what else do you want in a music video?

Let me be clear

I think these works are excellent

I am interested in the creative decisions made in thier construction - and I think they are creative decisions not happenstance - I want to know more about those decisions so I can learn from them and am lucky to be on a board where people post such work :) no more no less

thanks steven!

the lenses for Tighten Up were

Canon 16-35 2.8
Canon 24-70 2.8
Canon 70-200 2.8

For Next Girl it was mostly Canon 24-70 2.8

For the commercial it was Canon 50 1.8

Very creative works...

thanks buddy!
