***Music Video***

I recently shot and edited a music video within 24 hours for a young pop artist in NYC.

It could be better, but I think it came out okay. Only lighting that was used was from the streets of NYC. Many shots are a little out of focus (the ones not purposely done) and over/under exposed, but I worked with what I had.

It's a nightmare trying to shoot anything here without getting kicked out or bringing too much attention to yourself.

About 90% of it was filmed with Sony FS100 and Rokinon 35mm/1.4, kit lens and 16mm pancake...and 10% with Canon S95 wherever we got kicked out. The S95 is a little pocket camera that's like the iconic DVX100B in the prosumer point and shoot category.

I am relatively new to filmmaking, so if anyone does watch it, any feedback (negative or positive) is welcomed to help me learn.

Thanks!

keep a close eye on focus and exposure, ere on the side of under rather than over, and pointless out of focus. It is incredible that you can get nuclear over exposure on a night exterior, I want that camera so bad.

I didn't even notice which footage was from the s95, which speaks volumes to how good these little point and shooters are getting. I have an elph 300 for my family fun camera and am quite impressed with what it can do, but I do miss manual control, I may find myself springing for the s100 down the road, but I'd have a hard time explaining the cost for a pocket cam, oh well. Do the s series have full manual control parameters, shutter-speed, iso, f-stop independently controlable?

I think the s100 has more manual features, but the s95 has nothing. All you can do is control the exposure BEFORE you start filming and manual WB. There is a hack out there where you can zoom and have autofocus in video mode now, but it's a little slow. Normally, you cannot autofocus and zoom while recording.

That was fantastic. I really thought you captured that song visually. My only critique would be to replace all the shots with her in front of the ship by the water. It has nothing to do with the photography I just feel it shows off the performers dancing limitations.

Thank you! I agree, but they wanted some dancing shots. At the end of the shoot around midnight, we set up a little jib by the Intrepid in a private park around lamp posts for lighting. She's actually a really good dancer, but those shots don't really show that, haha

Loved it, but have to agree with the above. Christmas song, xmas lights, then all of a sudden, short skirt with a tank top at a shipyard. (seemed a little out of place)

Otherwise, loved the cutting, feel, and (even this 55 year old) kinda liked the song. (God forbid if Robert Johnson, Hendrix, or Stevie Ray ever hear me say that out loud.)

Lol, funniest post I read in a while. Thanks

Thank you, and I think Hendrix would dig it!!

be well

That is fantastic. It's one of the most 'filmic' FS100 pieces I've seen anywhere. Tell us what settings you used, (picture profiles, f stops, editing NLE, post grading). Great song, great cinematography, editing, loved the ending cut.

I just got the Rokinon 35mm as well. I was trying it out at night at f1.4 and I liked the bokeh, roundness of the out of focus lights in the background, but at least on mine, though they are circular in the center of the frame, then get oval and misshaped toward the edges, have you noticed that?

Anyway, great work, you and your client should be proud.

Thanks Rob!

Congrats on your purchase, btw. The biggest challenge for me was focusing with the wide open 1.4 lens and controlling the bokeh. One of my favorite features is adjusting the WB temp with the dial.

Still trying to find myself with the shoulder rig. When I used my HMC150, I always, always used the eyepiece. I tried the external monitor viewing, but I'm going to go back to the loupe. I just feel much more comfortable shooting that way and don't feel right not having something pressed up against my eye.

Overall, I still have a lot to learn..

Thank you!!

I used a custom profile pic from Abel Cine and the default PP6. I cut the whole thing in FCP 7. I used various magic bullet looks for my coloring at a very light percentage just to "boost" the colors a bit. The images from the camera were already phenomenal. I used the Rokinon for almost the whole thing at 1.4. Even in the day time with the Fader ND from LCW. The kit lens and pancake were used only on the driving shots, which I stabilized in FCP. I somehow and somewhere find myself using smoothcam on every single piece I ever cut. We didn't want to go overboard with any crazy effects...I just used some random filters FCP offers.

As far as the bokeh with the Rok., I'm not sure about your question. Do you have a sample pic or vid?

Here's a couple of small frame grabs, notice the out of focus lights in the background, in the middle they are perfect circles, but toward the edges they get squeezed and are ovals? Wondering if you've noticed this with your lens and if it just how this Rokinon lens is?

I think that's just how it's supposed to be based on the lighting, objects and distance. That's some crazy observation, haha.

So NorBro, do you think this is normal then, do you know if this happens with your Rokinon 35mm 1.4? I just ask because it is actually something I notice and for me is indicating that the bokeh is distorted at the edges of the frame, also, on some lenses I have this doesn't happen. Wondering if this is the 'aspherical' nature of that and the other Rokinon Lenses. (I have a 85mm f 1.4 as well, haven't yet tried it with my FS100).

Norbro, another thing, what Able Cine Profile did you use? There are several. I have used the AB_RANGE and the Cinestyle a bit, not the others.

I think it's normal and that better glass would produce better results..I don't think anything is wrong with the lens...I'll let you know if mine does that the next time I go out..the pp i used was ab_hilit
