hey guys.. here is a little music video I shot for some group in Thailand. I shot it in NYC and the director just had the guys run around the city jus rappin. Enjoy..

It's shot in 24p mode and it was my first project shot on October with my first experience with the glidecam.. so If the glide tends to tilt a lot.. the reason is my experience with it.

You need huge forearms for the Glidecam..

Tell me what you think..

Hey man,

Not bad with the glidecam, you sold me. The only thing I didn't like about the video was the girl singing. She's gotta move her lips more, she's supposed to be lip syncing, not whispering! Just got really annoying, and I know it's not your fault.

Hi CLD,
Nice job with that, very clean! Can you tell me about the camera settings you used, and what you may have done to the vid in post? Also, was that shot in 16:9 squeeze or did you just add a matte box effect?
Thanks!
Joe

Hey guys thx for the replies...

Justin, I agree with the girl part.. She isnt really the actual singer of the song, she was the director's friend and he called her to come to set and play that part. That explains the whisperness.. We noticed it but she wouldnt budge.. oh well..

Joe, The camera settings I used is pretty straight forward, I stayed with the 24P mode, and I white balanced to the most whitest in the area, and I played with the color temp on the scene file settings to get the most color or best color on their faces. I usually do this looking at the viewfinder, and not the LCD because the LCD tricks you.
I didnt do much in Post, as you can see its pretty simple. I tried using the way its cut to make it effective. A few white flashes, dip to blacks, and slow motion shots and I'm good.
It was shot 4:3 framed 16:9, and then added the matte effect in post. I hate squeezing it, because it makes everyone look fat.. HAHA

XL7, did you try right clicking it, and saving to file like that? unless you got a Mac, then I don't know..

If you guys look closely, where there is a slow motion tracking shot through the birds to the guy in the middle of the video, you can see me in the reflection of the window.. YES I HAVE CAMEO!

Take care..

Thanks CLD, once again, nice work. I am still confused about the 16:9 issue... so you shot in standard 4:3? Then just added a matte box in post? But there is nothing 16:9 about this correct?
Thanks for tha help.

That's what I was doing. Must have been down temporarily or something with my DNS. Anyway, downloading it now.

Joe, the issue you assumed is correct. I framed my shots as if it was 16:9, and then when I put my Matte on, it gives me the option to move my picture up or down if it cuts anything out..

I shoot 4:3 first so then I have more head and leg room to play with when I matte it. I always do that..

The 16:9 matte on the camera is kinda stupid.. you can get the same effect by taping the top and bottom of the LCD.

There is nothing true 16:9, not anapmorhic lens, nothing.. just a post Matte.

Looks sweet. I am getting ready to shoot my 1st music video and need some pointers. I see you used NY traffic shot...was that hard to do? Also what did you use for playback? How many takes did you have to do to complete the video?

MJ.. this is a "ghetto" shoot, which basically means that I didn't use much for a budget.. the playback was simply a boombox with the song, you just got to make sure the artist REALLY KNOWS THEIR SONG. As for the traffic in NYC, we basically shot it early in the morning, so the traffic is less, and then we literally just ran to the middle of the street, and shot it.

People in NYC usually don't care about what you do, because everyone there is shooting something.

Some pointers:
-make sure the artist is very expressive when it comes to singing with the song.. have that person be a little bit exaggerated because normal singing looks boring.. for example.. the girl in the video.. HAHA..
-are you doing a story? are you doing just basic shot after shot? You have a few options. whatever it is, just MAKE IT AS FLASHY AS POSSIBLE!
-slow motion shots are always a plus in music videos as something you can think of thats "flashy"

Theres a lot of more pointers.. Anyone can help you out here.. right?

Hey good stuff man! just a couple of questions, my glidecam is kicking my azz, can you tell me how many weights did you use to balance the camera? i'm going crazy! thanks in advance - krs

I wonder if it's just the compression or ... something... you said you shot this in 24p? For some reason it looked like video to me, no offense or anything, it just looked too smooth.

I also think some CC could really help this video out, unless you're going for that sort of raw look, which is perfectly fine... but - that's my 2 cents

I liked it alot the colors were very good and it flowed well. It kept my atention and I think you did a hell of a good job with the glidecam there was only a little noticable tilts that wern't ment to be there everything eltse looks good.

I understood half of what they were saying, my girlfriend helped fill in the other half. They're rapping about how life was boring before they found music. Music fills their soul with happiness and gives them freedom (isara - my old screen-name). He says we shouldn't think a lot (mai kit mak) about this song because they made it only to make themselves happy. That's the jist of it.

Having been recently adopted by the kind hearted people of Thailand, I must say, your video is offensive to me and all 65 million Thais. ...Kidding. It was actually very well done. Some great shots and locations. Didn't really see any room for improvement. It serves it's purpose well. The only suggestion I have is getting rid of the title/info text at the beginning and end. Most video channels and record labels don't want that, because video channels will place their own. So on the final copy (unless requested) you should leave it off. Just make a slate, 5 seconds before the video starts, that has all the info.

Good luck with the video and if you know where and when it will be playing I'll be sure and tune in here.

..next time remeber to take a white card or something white with you so that you can balance to a constant. a sheet of clean paper will work fine in a pinch :)
then you can stick it in your bag or case and leave it there so you always have something to use. ..havent watched it yet so nothing else to add at this point but the little bit of freindly advice.
