Music Video Shot On Hacked GH1

This is on the GH1 footage forum, but as an ex-7D user some Canon users may be interested in seeing it. 90% of the clips are ungraded as shot in-camera including all the cave scenes.

wait, this is sooo good! I love the transition in the song, wicked!

do you think you could elaborate more on how you shot everything etc?

I still don't like the way this camera looks at all in low light ( Cave Scene ). My favorite shot in the video was towards the middle / ending when the artist was walking through the forest / bushes.

Overall good job but you need to provide basic information of the artist and yourself so the audience can know who and what we are listening too.

Josh is a talented writer musician from south west Victoria in southern Australia. He's unsigned but has a lot of music out there already. He just about to start a long tour through Australia. http://www.myspace.com/joshrawiri

To the video; shot on the hacked GH1 with C-settings - middle ground 50mbs. Mostly I shot in 1080 25P native, but there are several 720P 50P slomo shots which proved problematic in the cave, meaning I had to shoot at 100th/sec and 800+ ASA. The main light source were ten candles and a single Kino Flo Diva as a key. I couldn't pump the Kino too much as it overpowered the candles, hence the slightly noisy picture inside.

Grip-wise I used a Miller Pro-jib, DigiDolly, Glidecam HD2000 and a Glidetrack (on one shot). I find the GH1 is too light for the Glidetrack to work effectively. It performs much better with a heavier camera like the 5D or 7D. Lenses were Zeiss Contax 28 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4 and 20mm pancake.

With the 20mm, I think it's a great lens, sharp; almost too sharp! Ther opening cave shot is the 20mm and the front and back wide shots of Josh on the Glidecam in the forest. So is the wide shot of Josh sitting down on the cliff. It was almost completely dark when that shot was taken. I tried to boost the blacks in post, but I've found the GH1 footage tends to fall apart when pushing the grade. The wide in the campfire is a 28mm 2.8 Zeiss Contax. The 20mm shot looked great but I didn't like the framing.

All-in-all it was a great experience working with the GH1 after my 7D. The main advantage over the Canon 7D is almost the total lack of aliasing and moire in any shots, even highly detailed wides shots shot on the 20mm. I was very impressed with this side of the camera. As much as I liked the 7D, the aliasing drove me nuts. Maybe the smaller sensor and scaling method og the Panasonic is helping things here. The articulated VF and digital focus assist made me not miss the Z-Finder at all.

Anyway, it's not a perfect video. We hardly had any budget at all (like most indi music videos), it was the first video I've attempted on the GH1 after buying it three weeks ago, and we had limited time. But as I said, I much more enjoyed using the GH1 for this project than if I'd used my Varicam.

Wow really? I thought all the cave scenes looked great, much better and sharper than the 550D could handle given those circumstances (I don't think the cave scenes were shot above 800 ISO)? Plus the 550D annoys the crap out of me when I point at mountain cliff walls or oceans and get rainbowey aliasing. She looked great especially in that area. Some very faint adding of grain would have helped get rid of the macroblocky processing patches and whited out candle highlights too.

powevideo, was it your idea to get the chick in that cave? Marina Torjinski's makeup and that Tess woman looks propa lush in it. I was hoping they'd be more weird stuff of her outside the cave though.

Overall very laid back and cool music video =]

Thanks Lammy. No, most of the cave was 400 ASA with some of the Contax lens stuff at 800 ASA if I shot 50P stuff. he 20mm was fast enough to shoot at 200 ASA. Seriously the improvement in aliasing over the 7D and 5D is mind-blowing. The GH1 excels in good light. Some of the shots I've taken for my next project look like they were shot on a HPX3000.

it was Josh and Marina's idea for the cave. \Never thought of taking her outside the cave. Should have had you on pre-production. But we didn't really have the time I guess. I only had a day for the cave, and it took 5 or 6 hours to apply the body paint and another 6+ hours to shoot the scenes. Thanks for your comments.
