Music Video on Canon 5D with ML RAW

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share with you some of my experiences with shooting the commercial project with Magic Lantern RAW for the first time.
After a long period of testing and preparation I finally decided to go ahead and use ML RAW in production. It was a music video, 2 full days of shooting on location.
I used 2 64 GiB CF cards, macbook to dump the data, MlRawViewer to preview the takes and making sure nothing is broken, 2TB lacie rugged drive to backup all the data.

An example frame grab:

The workflow was a bit complex but the end result is great. The RAW footage is amazing quality, the lighting conditions were difficult and without RAW it wouldn't be possible to capture all the details in highlights and in the shadows. The whole material took about 1 TB of space. The camera never froze, no footage was damaged, no pink frames, green tint, etc.
I must say that the current version of ML is much more stable and it can be used reliably, as opposed to earlier versions that I was testing.

I've described the process in more details on my blog, you can have a look if you are interested: http://blog.tomasz.cc/2014/09/shooting-music-video-ml-raw-5d-mark-iii/

Looks great.

I find it funny that a feature shoot I'm working with has had more problems with Arriraw and an older Codex recorder than I ever had with 5d raw.

Thanks! Never had a chance to work with Arriraw yet, only the ones from RED and from BMPCC.
What's so problematic about Arriraw?

hateom, your blog post was exceptionally good. Thank you. I'm looking forward to seeing the final result and reading your blog about the post production process.

Really glad to hear that, thanks! The second part is in progress and once it's finished I will post the link here.

Arriraw itself is fine but here are some of the problems we had:

A- camera, newer codex. Records well no problems.

B- camera, older codex recorder. Dropped frames and effed up shots here and there. Some sequences are missing half of the image frames.

Considering the price difference between an Arri shooting Arriraw to an external recorder such as codex to the 5d shooting raw on CF cards (!!!) it's pretty astounding.

I can imagine... The above reminded me of one photoshoot... The preparation was taking a lot of time, all the lights, generators, cables, etc. All of the sudden young girl comes with a model, holding a camera in one hand and a reflector in the other. 10 minutes later she was don, and the results were comparable to the ones from the mentioned photoshoot :)

It was firmware for 113, but I don't remember exactly what version it was. From what I remember it was a build from June 2014.

Great write up hateom. My 5D3 was primarily for photography only until a week or two ago when I jumped into Magic Lantern Raw for the 5D3. Good GOD it's amazing, I have the odd crash (probably due to me inputting clashing settings and trying to record), but it's been surprisingly reliable and stable. Video wise, it's just magnificent what you can achieve with this camera now. It's quite hard to return to my 8bit FS700 workflow having indulged in that 14bit raw within Davinci - I'm completely spoiled for image quality and look options with those files. Looking forward to seeing the final product!

Thanks man!
I feel the same way. After trying out RAW on my 5d3 and getting BMPCC for half the price I'm spoiled too much to get back to 8 bits :) so I go into RAW whenever possible.
